Along with the historic celebration, British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and French President Emmanuel Macron are taking the opportunity to discuss <strong>geopolitics and cooperation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two leaders met today (Nov. 11) to commemorate the signing of the Compiagne Armistice, a French national holiday and an occasion to celebrate war veterans. Given the climate of international tension, the occasion left room for <strong>discussions by the leaders of the two countries<\/strong> regarding\u00a0<strong>the continuation of mutual<\/strong> <strong>collaboration<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>the conflict in Ukraine and the situation in the Middle East<\/strong>, not neglecting <strong>migration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>After the informal European Council meetings in Budapest, <strong>President Macron<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/uk.ambafrance.org\/President-Macron-holds-talks-in-Paris-with-Sir-Keir-Starmer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recalled<\/a> the importance of affirming &#8220;the<strong> interests and responsibilities of Europeans in terms of security and defence<\/strong>.&#8221; In this regard, the relevance of cooperation between the EU and the UK was reiterated.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">On this, Downing Street head<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/02\/strengthening-strategic-cooperation-after-brexit-eu-and-uk-have-common-goals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0met in October <\/a>with\u00a0European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, who reaffirmed that &#8220;The<\/span>\u00a0common vision of the EU and the UK makes it possible to <strong>strengthen bilateral relations<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Starmer is working hard to reduce the post-Brexit distance from the EU<\/strong>, so much so that summit meetings with Brussels have also been scheduled for 2025.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">For the\u00a0<strong>next year<\/strong>, the British prime minister\u00a0also<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/joint-statement-between-uk-and-france-18-july-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> committed\u00a0<\/a>to holding\u00a0<strong>bilateral meetings with Paris<\/strong>, considering &#8220;the UK&#8217;s intention to reset its relationship with the EU and Europe in general.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0The need to coordinate also in <strong>extra-European issues<\/strong> did not go unnoticed. Regarding <strong>Russian aggression against Ukraine, the\u00a0intent to &#8220;coordinate closely<\/strong>&#8221; was renewed. Firm <strong>support for Ukraine &#8220;relentlessly and for as long as necessary&#8221;<\/strong>. Credit: Justin Tallis \/ AFP<\/figcaption><\/figure><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Defense Secretary John Healey denied\u00a0on <em>BBC<\/em> radio rumours of London&#8217;s disengagement<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BBCr4today\/status\/1855913343162167336\">It seemed that the United Kingdom<\/a>\u00a0had no intention to grant long-range weapons, and &#8220;relations had deteriorated.&#8221; Healey dispelled any doubts: &#8220;We are <strong>spending more on military aid to Ukraine than has ever been done by the British government<\/strong>.&#8221; Likewise, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BBCr4today\/status\/1855913343162167336\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he reaffirmed<\/a> that the Ukrainian Ministry of Defence itself has confidence that &#8220;Britain continues to stand firmly behind their country.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Healey is also confident about <strong>maintaining U.S. support<\/strong>, which he expects to &#8220;remain steadfast&#8221; in its support for Ukraine and also stable for NATO, but this will have to be confirmed with the next steps of the Trump\u00a0second term.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">On the <strong>Middle East, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.uk\/government\/news\/joint-statement-between-uk-and-france-18-july-2024\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">last July&#8217;s\u00a0position<\/a> was reaffirmed<\/strong>, which revolves around the call for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, along with the release of all hostages, unimpeded access to humanitarian aid, respect for international law, and progress toward the establishment of a Palestinian state. The two leaders took stock of the escalation in the area and stressed the need for coordinated efforts with regional and international partners to work together.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The last major issue is <strong>migration<\/strong>. Both countries have acknowledged the <strong>need to cooperate regarding migration flows in the Channel<\/strong>, which, although\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/15\/irregular-border-crossings-detected-by-frontex-continue-to-drop\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diminished<\/a> (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontex.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Frontex<\/a> through October recorded 47,514 crossings) still cause problems for the authorities of the two countries. <strong>Not to be forgotten <\/strong>is<strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/09\/04\/naufragio-manica-donna-incinta-bambini\/\">September&#8217;s shipwreck<\/a><\/strong>, an episode that made explicit, albeit tragically, the need for joint work between France and the UK. The need to dismantle human trafficking networks to limit irregular crossings was also reiterated.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defense.gouv.fr\/terre\/actualites\/cest-quoi-lentente-cordiale#:~:text=Sign%C3%A9e%20le%208%20avril%201904,portant%20sur%20la%20politique%20%C3%A9trang%C3%A8re.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Entent cordiel<\/a><em> 2.0<\/em><\/strong> the one between France and the United Kingdom. In addition to issues of geopolitics and the ones to be solved collaboratively, they agreed to intensify cooperation concerning ocean and biodiversity protection, artificial intelligence, and with regard to climate targets, on which the two strait-neighbours maintain very aligned positions (and it suits both to shake hands).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The French president and the British prime minister celebrate the anniversary of the World War I armistice.
