{"id":403951,"date":"2024-11-12T17:19:19","date_gmt":"2024-11-12T16:19:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/11\/12\/diminuzione-sacchetti-plastica-ue-2022\/"},"modified":"2024-11-15T17:56:58","modified_gmt":"2024-11-15T16:56:58","slug":"less-pollution-europeans-give-up-plastic-bags","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/12\/less-pollution-europeans-give-up-plastic-bags\/","title":{"rendered":"Less pollution, Europeans give up plastic bags"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Brussels &#8211;\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">In 2022, 4.7 billion fewer <\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">lightweight<\/span> <span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\"><a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/plastics\/plastic-bags_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">plastic bags<\/a><\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\"> were consumed than in the previous year.<\/strong>\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">According to\u00a0<strong>Eurostat<\/strong>\u00a0surveys, 29.8 billion new bags were used in the year, a<strong>\u00a014 per cent<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0per capita decrease compared to 2021<\/strong>, corresponding to 66.6 bags\u00a0per person used in 2022.<\/p>\n<p><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Since 2018, the European Statistical Agency\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>has noted a downward trend<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">, which, from over 40 billion, shows that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">consumption almost halved at\u00a0the end of the period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\">At the country level, there are apparent differences. Compared to the European average, we find <strong>Lithuania and Latvia leading<\/strong>. The two countries, in 2022, recorded the <strong>highest number of plastic bags made of lightweight material per capita<\/strong>, 249 for Lithuania and 193 for Latvia. The Czech Republic closely follows them with 185 bags per capita.<\/p>\n<p class=\"ecl-u-type-paragraph\"><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">The best data were recorded by Belgium, with only four bags per person\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">in 2022, Poland with seven, and Portugal with 13.<\/span> <strong>Italy<\/strong> attests an unflattering result, which is almost double the European average, with 122 shoppers per person.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The significant differences depend on the <strong>efficiency of implementing measures<\/strong>, which are influenced by economic, social, and political factors. <strong>Some countries <\/strong>implemented <strong>consumption reduction measures<\/strong> from 2018\u20132022, while others implemented them over a longer period. The <strong>different calculation methods in EU countries also have an impact<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Overall, at the EU level, all countries must commit to <strong>reducing consumption<\/strong> as\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the so-called<strong>\u00a0<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/environment.ec.europa.eu\/topics\/plastics\/plastic-bags_en?prefLang=it&amp;etrans=it\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Plastic Bag Directive requires<\/strong><\/a><\/span>. <strong>By December 31, 2025, the goal for countries would be not to exceed 40 bags per person<\/strong>, which, given the differences, will need a lot of work for countries well above average.<\/p>\n<p>This directive (EU Directive 2015\/720) amends previous packaging policy measures. Focusing on reducing the use of lightweight plastic bags (i.e., less than 50 microns thick) would go a long way toward contributing to the fact that they are <strong>one of the top ten wastes in Europe<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Moreover, <strong>this type of packaging tends to be used only once<\/strong>\u00a0but takes centuries to degrade fully in the natural environment. Before that happens, they are often ingested by land or marine animals or break down into microplastics.
