Borrell: &#8220;We must be ready&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The European Union &#8220;must be ready&#8221; a<strong>fter\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/06\/trump-returns-to-the-white-house-and-the-european-union-worries\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the election of Donald Trump<\/a> <\/strong>in the United States. This was the warning of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs,\u00a0<strong>Josep Borrell,<\/strong> during the <strong>plenary of the European Parliament in Brussels<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The cryptic message comes during the <strong>debate regarding EU-US relations<\/strong>. Trump&#8217;s <strong>victory<\/strong>, according to Borrell, <strong>is not &#8220;accidental,<\/strong> but shows a profound social change in US society, also seen\u00a0on the other side of the Atlantic. Credit: Multimedia Centre<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Any action<\/strong> that Trump decides to take <strong>will impact the EU<\/strong>, and &#8220;the key words are security, trade, and technology,&#8221; Borrell adds. Whether it is tariffs on European or Chinese products, US decisions will directly or indirectly affect European competitiveness and the geopolitical balance in which the EU operates.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Ukraine, the Middle East, and the China-Taiwan relationship are the &#8216;hot potatoes&#8217; of the future<\/strong>. Regarding the former, Borrell during his visit to Kyiv had <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/ukraine-remarks-high-representativevice-president-josep-borrell-meeting-prime-minister-denys-shmyhal_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">clearly said<\/a>: &#8220;<strong>Ukraine has been fighting in order to get independence, <\/strong>and to look for a space in the geopolitical landscape. And<strong> the place for you has been decided: it is the European Union.<\/strong>&#8221; The promise of joining the EU requires a strategy to\u00a0offset any US disengagement, including rethinking how to use frozen Russian funds.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0<strong>Borrell urges to\u00a0focus on &#8220;our security,&#8221;<\/strong> with actual actions (as opposed to the slogans after the first\u00a0Trump term), for example, related to increasing military spending. &#8220;The European Union is not only an economic union, but also a political union,&#8221; in which the development of security and defense policy falls, the High Representative reminds, as with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/strategic-compass-security-and-defence-1_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Strategic Compass<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">It is not insignificant for the High Representative that <strong>the Union is not so united in its\u00a0reactions to Trump<\/strong>. And the debate among MEPs gives him full credit.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">\u00a0&#8220;The US election result told us nothing new,&#8221; begins MEP <strong>Andrzej Halicki of the EPP<\/strong>, confirming citizens&#8217; demands on security, mirrored in the EU as well. The Pole highlights\u00a0the <strong>importance of greater European autonomy in\u00a0defense<\/strong>, which, as Borrell also\u00a0mentions, requires\u00a0more\u00a0investment. Halicki winks at his government&#8217;s (nationalist) &#8220;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.pl\/web\/primeminister\/East-Shield\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">East Shield<\/a>&#8221; project, which he says should be supported and taken into account to strengthen the borders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Alongside the moderation of the EPP, there is e<strong>nthusiasm from the Patriots for Europe. &#8220;The European Union must learn lessons <\/strong>and take care of the nations that comprise it,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Jordan Bardella of PfE<\/strong>, comparing Trumpian nationalism to democratic Europe. It also must focus on not falling behind economically, more than it already has, by simplifying and helping its industries. &#8220;<strong>Let&#8217;s wake up, or we risk disappearing<\/strong>,&#8221; he warns in his conclusion.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>The president\u00a0of the Renew Group, Valerie Hayer,<\/strong> shares this opinion even though she is less enthusiastic. It will be crucial for the EU to defend its interests, move out of\u00a0a wait-and-see mode, and protect itself, especially with Ukraine increasingly in the balance. &#8220;<strong>What is at\u00a0stake is\u00a0our security,<\/strong>&#8221; Hayer adds, on which there is a lack of investment and the market is too fragmented. In addition,\u00a0the EU needs to think about its own <strong>competitiveness <\/strong>and<strong> innovation<\/strong> regarding\u00a0artificial intelligence, where it is still lagging.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Nicola Procaccini of the ECR<\/strong> shows confidence<strong>: &#8220;The outcome of the US elections will not change the relationship between the EU and the US.&#8221; <\/strong>He is confident that relations between the two sides of the Atlantic will remain solid, even though these elections<strong> &#8220;have burst the bubble in Brussels.&#8221; <\/strong>Procaccini was\u00a0referring to the European left (about whose frustration he gloats a bit), which, he says, has not understood voters and what they want. Also back with ECR is the talk about defense and the need to strengthen within NATO, but, in his case, with a smile on his face.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Far from a smile were the words of MEP <strong>Yannis Maniatis of S&amp;D<\/strong>. &#8220;The EU must become\u00a0<strong>strategically autonomous<\/strong>&#8221; from the US since the first term gave a clear idea\u00a0of how Trump relates to international relations: No multilateralism, little international law, and the green transition that could go up in smoke, according to Maniatis. T<strong>he EU must\u00a0push to be independent and autonomous<\/strong> as the stakes are high.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;<strong>The US [&#8230;] will be ruled by a professed anti-democrat<\/strong>,&#8221; says <strong>Martin Schirdewan of The Left<\/strong>. Critical of the Musk-Trump duo (rightly so),\u00a0he speaks of\u00a0an oligarchy, especially with the risks from the spread of fake news. He also beats him on the point of defense and the <strong>risks to the industry, which must be &#8220;ready for the future.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Terry Reintke of the Greens\/Ale calls for a stronger European Union<\/strong>. He does not congratulate those who &#8220;will do damage in the world and to the EU,&#8221; which the far right does not seem to realize. Reintke calls for investment in &#8220;European <strong>independence from autocrats<\/strong>,&#8221; whether Trump or Putin, with much focus on global European goals, such as those on climate change.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;<strong>This situation is not the end of the world, but it is definitely the beginning of a different world,&#8221; said Borrell, summing up the European puzzle.<\/strong>\u00a0The question, to\u00a0which the answer could be uncomfortable, is whether the European Union will\u00a0be able to be a part of it.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;This situation is not the end of the world, but it is definitely the beginning of a different world,&#8221; the High Representative said.
