Brussels – Better late than never<\/strong>, the saying goes. It is a saying that pretty well sums up the Western\u2014certainly European\u2014approach toward providing military aid to Ukraine<\/strong> in its resistance to Russian aggression, which has now lasted more than two and a half years. According to sources inside the EU executive, Brussels is on target to deliver one million artillery shells<\/strong> to Kyiv. But the original deadline was last March.<\/p>\n

A senior\u00a0Union External Action Service<\/strong>\u00a0official confirmed during a press briefing in preparation for the\u00a0Foreign Affairs Council<\/strong>\u00a0on November 18<\/span>\u00a0that by the end of the year, the goal<\/strong> of delivering to the Ukrainian army one million artillery shells<\/strong> to defend against Russian attacks will be met. Production would have touched 98 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0of the ammunition in question. A target that\u00a0should have been achieved eight months ago<\/strong>, in March, according to commitments made initially by the Twenty-Seven.<\/p>\n

Albeit belatedly, then, Brussels will supply Kyiv with the ammunition it needs just before the inauguration of the new U.S. president,\u00a0<\/span>Donald Trump<\/strong>,<\/span>\u00a0takes place, a handover that\u00a0<\/span>is generating<\/a>\u00a0much\u00a0<\/span>insecurity about the future of the conflict<\/strong>.<\/span> The High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, Josep Borrell<\/strong>, anticipated this during a visit<\/a> to the former Soviet republic’s capital, though he did not go into detail about the figures cited today by the
\nEU diplomatic service official. The initiative is part\u00a0<\/a>of\u00a0<\/a>the<\/span>\u00a0European Peace Facility<\/strong> (EPF) and was approved by the Council in May 2023.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
