Brussels\u00a0– Economics Minister Robert Habeck<\/strong> will be the chancellor candidate of the German environmentalists<\/strong> in the upcoming elections, which will be held in February following the collapse of the government of Olaf Scholz<\/strong>, of which the Greens are also a member. The decision was made yesterday (Nov. 17) during the party’s federal congress<\/b>, which supported the vice chancellor’s nomination with more than 96 per cent of the votes.<\/p>\n

After Chancellor Olaf Scholz<\/strong> fired<\/a> his Finance Minister, Liberal leader Christian Lindner<\/strong>, initiating the government crisis<\/strong> that engulfed the shaky “semaphore coalition” (composed of his SPD, the liberals of the FDP and the Greens), the forces in the German political chessboard are positioning themselves to best compete during the early elections scheduled for Feb. 23<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

So the Greens (B\u00fcndnis 90\/Die Gr\u00fcnen)<\/strong>, gathered at a congress in Wiesbaden<\/strong>, not far from Frankfurt, have chosen<\/a> to put all their eggs in the basket on their most prominent politician, namely the current Economy<\/strong> incumbent in Scholz’s resigning cabinet, Robert Habeck<\/strong>.\u00a0The vice chancellor garnered\u00a0<\/span>96.48 per cent of the votes cast<\/strong>\u00a0(741 out of 768) and said he was confident that, in the coming months, the electorate will\u00a0decide to restore confidence in the ecologists, who currently have\u00a0<\/span>around 11 per cent support<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Environmentalists have declared themselves ready to take (or rather keep)\u00a0<\/span>government responsibility<\/strong>\u00a0even if they were to share it with the\u00a0<\/span>Christian Democratic Union (CDU\/CSU)<\/strong>\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span>Friedrich Merz<\/strong>, given the lead by all polls with more than 30 per cent.<\/span>\u00a0The second force at the federal level is the\u00a0<\/span>ultra-right of AfD<\/strong>\u00a0and, only third, Scholz’s\u00a0<\/span>SPD<\/strong>\u2014although the Social Democrats would like to\u00a0<\/span>change the losing horse<\/a>\u00a0and replace him with\u00a0<\/span>Boris Pistorius<\/strong>, Berlin’s popular Defense Minister, to try to contest Merz for the chancellery.<\/span><\/p>\n

Habeck, after all, has had the chancellery<\/strong> in his sights for quite some time. According to some rumours, he would be the one<\/a> behind the resignation\u00a0of the party’s top leadership<\/strong> after the election debacle<\/a> in the eastern L\u00e4nder of Saxony<\/strong>, Thuringia<\/strong> and Brandenburg<\/strong>. The new leaders of the Greens are Franziska Brantner<\/strong> and Felix Banaszak<\/strong>, elected on Saturday (Nov. 16) by the federal assembly of delegates with 78 and 93 per cent of the votes<\/strong>, respectively: the former was secretary of state in Habeck’s ministry, while the latter was elected to the Bundestag in 2021, in the legislature that is now coming to an end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"

The economy minister has a firm grip on the environmental party, which will now support him between now and the February 2025 elections.
