The decision was made yesterday (Nov. 17) during the <b>party&#8217;s federal congress<\/b>, which supported the vice chancellor&#8217;s nomination with more than 96 per cent of the votes.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After Chancellor <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/07\/scholz-government-collapses-snap-elections-in-early-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fired<\/a> his Finance Minister, Liberal leader <strong>Christian Lindner<\/strong>, initiating the <strong>government crisis<\/strong> that engulfed the shaky &#8220;semaphore coalition&#8221; (composed of his SPD, the liberals of the FDP and the Greens), the forces in the German political chessboard are positioning themselves to best compete during the <strong>early elections scheduled for Feb. 23<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">So the <strong>Greens (B\u00fcndnis 90\/Die Gr\u00fcnen)<\/strong>, gathered at a congress in <strong>Wiesbaden<\/strong>, not far from Frankfurt, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/germany-greens-pick-habeck-to-head-snap-election-campaign\/a-70803432\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have chosen<\/a> to put all their eggs in the basket on their most prominent politician, namely the <strong>current Economy<\/strong> incumbent in Scholz&#8217;s resigning cabinet, <strong>Robert Habeck<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">The vice chancellor garnered\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">96.48 per cent of the votes cast<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0(741 out of 768) and said he was confident that, in the coming months, the electorate will\u00a0decide to restore confidence in the ecologists, who currently have\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">around 11 per cent support<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Environmentalists have declared themselves ready to take (or rather keep)\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">government responsibility<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0even if they were to share it with the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Christian Democratic Union (CDU\/CSU)<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0of\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Friedrich Merz<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, given the lead by all polls with more than 30 per cent.<\/span>\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">The second force at the federal level is the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">ultra-right of AfD<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0and, only third, Scholz&#8217;s\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">SPD<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u2014although the Social Democrats would like to\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/germanys-scholz-faces-calls-his-party-abandon-re-election-bid-2024-11-15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">change the losing horse<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0and replace him with\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Boris Pistorius<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, Berlin&#8217;s popular Defense Minister, to try to contest Merz for the chancellery.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Habeck, after all, <strong>has had the chancellery<\/strong> in his sights for quite some time. According to some rumours, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/27\/german-greens-top-leadership-resignation-and-robert-habecks-rise-to-power\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he would be the one<\/a> behind the resignation\u00a0<strong>of the party&#8217;s top leadership<\/strong> after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/07\/scholz-government-collapses-snap-elections-in-early-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">election debacle<\/a> in the eastern L\u00e4nder of <strong>Saxony<\/strong>, <strong>Thuringia<\/strong> and <strong>Brandenburg<\/strong>. The new leaders of the Greens are <strong>Franziska Brantner<\/strong> and <strong>Felix Banaszak<\/strong>, elected on Saturday (Nov. 16) by the federal assembly of delegates with <strong>78 and 93 per cent of the votes<\/strong>, respectively: the former was secretary of state in Habeck&#8217;s ministry, while the latter was elected to the Bundestag in 2021, in the legislature that is now coming to an end.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The economy minister has a firm grip on the environmental party, which will now support him between now and the February 2025 elections.
