Truly. These are not\u00a0accidents at work but the result of rising temperatures from climate change. A phenomenon so present and increasingly problematic that it put European politicians on high alert. Dan-\u015etefan Motreanu, an EPP MEP, sounds\u00a0the alarm: &#8220;<strong>I<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>n 2020, over 80,000 people fell ill and 67 died from working in extreme heat<\/strong>,&#8221; he denounced in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/E-10-2024-001915_EN.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a parliamentary question<\/a>.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This represents an alarming\u00a0<strong>42 percent increase in heat-related deaths<\/strong> at work in the EU since the turn of the century.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EPP MEP\u00a0argues that the numbers indicate that &#8220;the\u00a0<strong>problem of workers being exposed to extreme temperatures is becoming increasingly serious in the EU\u00a0 <\/strong>as climate change increases the frequency and intensity of heat waves.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Nicolas Schmit<\/strong>, Commissioner for Labor and Social Affairs, acknowledges not only the problem but also the concern of the entire college. &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The Commission takes the risks of extreme heat at work very seriously&#8221; is the foreword to his\u00a0response.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>High temperatures at work can cause significant health issues, both for outdoor and indoor workplaces<\/strong>.&#8221; However, European legislation can address the\u00a0issue only to\u00a0a certain extent since labor and employment policies remain the exclusive responsibility of the member states, so it\u00a0is up to governments to determine how to proceed.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/legal-content\/EN\/TXT\/?uri=celex%3A31989L0391\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU occupational health and safety directives<\/a> &#8220;establish <strong>minimum requirements.<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0Member states can adopt stricter protective measures, including establishing maximum allowable temperatures in the workplace. However,\u00a0there are no obligations of any kind.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> It is primarily for the national authorities to enforce national measures transposing EU Directives,&#8221; Schmit continued.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>What is certain is that mugginess and even more extreme heat are increasingly beginning to pose a problem for the EU from a social and\u00a0an economic perspective. The European Central Bank had already raised the issue of spillovers to productivity from heat stress in the workplace, warning about potential risks in terms of economic performance and competitiveness.\u00a0 However, the situation is beginning to take on a new dimension now.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Fatal heat strokes on the rise: up 42 percent since 2000.
