It is\u00a0<strong>the lowest monthly figure since April 2022<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the nearly 70,000 first-time applicants,\u00a06,285 applied for asylum,\u00a0at least for the second time. Also\u00a0in August, Syrians remained the largest nationality of asylum seekers (13,340 first-time applicants), followed by Afghans (5,605) and Venezuelans (4,690).<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/20395343\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/20395343\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p>Germany, Spain, France, and Italy continue to receive\u00a0about 70 percent of all asylum requests in the EU. However,\u00a0compared to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/21\/nearly-75000-asylum-claims-in-the-eu-in-july-down-from-previous-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the previous month,<\/a>\u00a0there was a\u00a0<strong>significant decrease in those that Rome received<\/strong>: in July, there were 13,235, and in August, there were\u00a09,620. Germany received 18,425, Spain 10,580, and France 10,035.<\/p>\n<p>In proportion to the population\u00a0of each member country, however, the highest rates of asylum seekers were in Greece &#8211; 59.9 per hundred thousand population &#8211; and Ireland &#8211; 31.5 per hundred thousand population.
