The EU Parliament&#8217;s decision pleases, but not the Left"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; &#8220;<strong>As long as necessary<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>is the EU&#8217;s promise to Ukraine<\/strong>. With the involvement of China and North Korea, escalation is just around the corner, and <strong>the Europarliament, in its Strasbourg plenary, reiterated its support for Kyiv<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20241121IPR25543\/more-military-support-for-ukraine-amid-the-involvement-of-china-and-north-korea\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>From the resolution<\/strong> <\/a>approved Thursday (Nov. 28) comes <strong>another condemnation of Russia&#8217;s war of aggression against Ukraine and the worsening conflict<\/strong>. To the international community, MEPs call for action to deal with the black hole that the now over <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/19\/zelensky-at-eu-parliament-to-mark-1000-days-since-start-of-ukraine-war-lets-push-russia-toward-a-just-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a thousand days<\/a>\u00a0of war are. &#8220;<strong>No negotiations on Ukraine can take place without Ukraine<\/strong>,&#8221; the MEPs reiterate, calling on the EU and member states to work to increase international support and identify a peaceful solution to the war.<\/p>\n<h4 id='the-triangular-beijing-pyongyang-and-moscow'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">The triangular Beijing, Pyongyang, and Moscow<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">North Korea&#8217;s sending of troops and testing of ballistic missiles in Ukraine<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0are frightening and, from the EU perspective, represent &#8220;a new phase of warfare&#8221; and are &#8220;a<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">\u00a0new risk to the security of Europe as a whole<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Beijing<\/strong> is asked to <strong>end military assistance and the supply of dual-use goods<\/strong> to Russia. An\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/doceo\/document\/TA-10-2024-0055_EN.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">additional warning<\/a>\u00a0comes from the EU in reference to Chinese actions, &#8220;Refusal to change the course of action in this regard risks <strong>damaging to EU-China<\/strong> bilateral relations seriously,&#8221; already in crisis over a trade war onset\u00a0that started <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/29\/eu-duties-on-chinese-electric-cars-final\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">with European electric car duties to China<\/a> and continued with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/11\/chinese-retaliation-to-ev-duties-anti-dumping-measures-on-eu-brandy-ready\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Chinese duties on European brandy<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">On this occasion, the EU Parliament also does not miss China&#8217;s influence on <strong>North Korea<\/strong>, now involved in the war in Ukraine. To avoid the shipment\u00a0of arms to Russia, more international cooperation is called for, exerting &#8220;constant <strong>pressure on Pyongyang to cease its destabilizing actions<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Member states are urged to\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">strengthen the sanctions regime over North Korea, along with Belarus and Iran<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, including adding to the list of EU sanctions Chinese entities and individuals that support Russia or the Russian defence and security sector.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4 id='not-a-farewell-to-arms-indeed-more-spending'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Not &#8220;A Farewell to Arms&#8221; (indeed, more spending)<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>An all-round commitment of the EU and individual states <\/strong>to Ukraine, which is also one of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/30\/eu-enlargement-2-ukraines-dream-of-eu-accession-becomes-increasingly-concrete\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">candidates to join the EU<\/a>. Despite the promise to implement <a href=\"https:\/\/war.ukraine.ua\/faq\/zelenskyys-10-point-peace-plan\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ukaine&#8217;s peace plan<\/a> and create the necessary conditions for\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">holding a second\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eda.admin.ch\/eda\/en\/fdfa\/fdfa\/aktuell\/dossiers\/konferenz-zum-frieden-ukraine.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peace Summit<\/a>,\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>much<\/strong><\/span><strong>\u00a0of the text\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><strong>is devoted to military support<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">There is talk of supplying aircraft, long-range missiles such as Taurus, air defence systems and all the armaments necessary to enable Ukraine to continue to resist.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>European Commission President von der Leyen<\/strong>\u00a0herself,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/27\/new-eu-commission-determined-to-boost-defence-industry-at-least-100-billion-in-the-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in yesterday&#8217;s speech<\/a>\u00a0(Nov. 27) before the vote on the College of Commissioners, had stressed the<strong>\u00a0need to spend more and cohesively on defence,<\/strong>\u00a0and this was clearly reflected in the resolution.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>All European states and NATO allies\u00a0<\/strong>should <strong>commit 0.25 per cent of the annual GDP to &#8220;collectively and individually&#8221; <\/strong>provide\u00a0<strong>military support to Ukraine<\/strong>. This is an important solicitation, which adds to\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/07\/over-118-billion-the-eu-has-already-spent-nearly-a-years-budget-on-ukraine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>over \u20ac118 billion <\/strong><\/a>already spent by the EU, an amount equal to almost an entire annual EU budget.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>Neither is the Trump 2.0<\/strong> issue overlooked, toward which there are hopes of strengthening transatlantic cooperation that is &#8220;mutually beneficial, highlighting the common strategic interest of supporting Ukraine.&#8221; The bogeyman of disengagement by the new Republican presidency prompts MEPs to seek the most relaxed relations possible because &#8220;how long as it takes&#8221; does not appeal to everyone.<\/p>\n<h4 id='all-happy-and-warmongering-but-not-the-left'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">All happy and warmongering, but not the Left<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><strong>The European Left voted compactly against the resolution<\/strong>, which passed with 390 votes in favour, 135 against and 52 abstentions. None of the group&#8217;s amendments managed to pass, meeting the opposition of the renewed &#8220;Ursula majority&#8221; in a very united way.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">There was a call to <strong>focus on ending the war diplomatically<\/strong>, as President Zelenskyy himself had recently said, by 2025, limiting the EU&#8217;s military contribution to the conflict.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Similarly,<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/18\/eu-remains-divided-on-ukraine-despite-the-specter-of-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>the condemnation<\/strong>\u00a0of Biden&#8217;s move<\/a>\u00a0to\u00a0<strong>authorize the Kyiv army to use long-range missiles<\/strong>\u00a0(capable of reaching targets 300 kilometres away) was also<\/span>\u00a0advanced in the amendments.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The pacifist intent of the Left was, however, a bust.\u00a0<strong>Bitter<\/strong> comment on X by the <strong>Movement 5Stelle Europe<\/strong>, part of the political group the Left:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">An\u00a0<strong>immoral measure<\/strong> was voted in at <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Europarl_IT?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@Europarl_IT<\/a>, criticizing those who try to seek a negotiated solution in <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Ucraina?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Ukraine<\/a>. By stigmatizing Chancellor Scholz, who phoned <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/Putin?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#Putin<\/a> in an attempt at dialogue last week, we make\u00a0a gift to the warmongers.<br \/>\n1\/2<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; M5S Europe (@M5S_Europe) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/M5S_Europa\/status\/1862143735796023635?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">November 28, 2024<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The stigma on the German chancellor refers to a paragraph in the resolution in which the entire European Parliament &#8220;deplores the German chancellor&#8217;s recent telephone conversation with Vladimir Putin.&#8221; The alleged diplomatic intent did not sit well with European colleagues, and the dark times for Scholz (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/07\/scholz-government-collapses-snap-elections-in-early-2025\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after the early elections<\/a>) seem to have just begun.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Today&#8217;s resolution aligns with the commitments the EU has agreed to make with Ukraine and with the defence objectives that are clear to von der Leyen bis. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/27\/new-eu-commission-determined-to-boost-defence-industry-at-least-100-billion-in-the-budget\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">While the defence industry presses<\/a> for investment upon investment to be made to strengthen the European (but especially the sector&#8217;s) position,\u00a0<strong>it remains to be seen how the Union will coordinate the spending<\/strong> of virtually an entire budget for a candidate country and its overall goals, <strong>so that &#8220;for as long as necessary&#8221; can be a realistic promise<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The resolution commits the EU to continue its support for Kyiv, condemning the Russian war and interference from China and North Korea.
