It happened again today (Dec. 5) during a discussion with the European Commission on the <strong>rules to be applied in 2025 for fishing in the Mediterranean Sea<\/strong>, which include a <strong>reduction in fishing quotas<\/strong> for certain fish stocks in the world&#8217;s largest closed sea.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Berlaymont&#8217;s goal would be to\u00a0<strong>make professional fishing more sustainable<\/strong>\u00a0by intervening in both\u00a0<\/span>catch quotas and the tools used by fishermen.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The EU executive&#8217;s decision, announced <a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/news\/commission-proposes-first-set-fishing-opportunities-2025-mediterranean-and-black-seas-2024-09-16_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in\u00a0<\/a><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/news\/commission-proposes-first-set-fishing-opportunities-2025-mediterranean-and-black-seas-2024-09-16_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">September\u00a0<\/a>and<\/span>\u00a0<strong>contested by the Democratic Party and Lega&#8217;s<\/strong> MEPs, concerns the reduction of fishing efforts in Mediterranean waters, where quotas would be <strong>reduced by 38 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0for <strong>cod<\/strong> and by <strong>29 per cent for red shrimp<\/strong>, while <strong>longline fishing is expected to be reduced by a quarter<\/strong> compared to 2024.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The overall reductions differ depending on the countries involved;\u00a0<strong>for Italy, it would be around 30 per cent<\/strong>\u00a0considering the Adriatic, Ionian, and Tyrrhenian Seas.<\/span>\u00a0The formal presentation of the proposal, which in the Commission&#8217;s plans should become operational as early as next January, will take place at the <strong>Agrifish Council<\/strong> on December 9\u201310.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to <strong>Giuseppe Lupo<\/strong> (PD), the Brussels proposal represents &#8220;<strong>a gift to fishing companies from non-EU countries<\/strong>, from which we already import 65 per cent of the fish consumed in Europe, and is incompatible with the economic and social sustainability of the sector.&#8221; For the Dem parliamentarian, who spoke during a debate in the Fisheries (PECH) committee in the EU Parliament, to protect fish stocks and promote their recovery the College &#8220;must first <strong>combat the main causes of pollution in the Mediterranean<\/strong> such as spillage of unpurified water and micro-plastics.&#8221; At the same time, the decision in question should be reviewed as it &#8220;would jeopardize the survival of Mediterranean fisheries.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Leghist <strong>Anna Maria Cisint<\/strong>, a member of the same parliamentary committee, also criticized the Berlaymont line. For the Lega&#8217;s\u00a0deputy, the proposal of the EU executive department that manages fisheries-related files (<strong>DG Mare<\/strong>) must be ditched. &#8220;The new Commission is proving to be worse than the previous one,&#8221; she said, adding that &#8220;<strong>a decisive intervention is needed to protect our country<\/strong>, given that hundreds of jobs in the entire fishing sector, already burdened by the restrictions imposed over the past five years, are at risk,&#8221; to prevent the <strong>&#8220;slow agony&#8221; of Italian fishermen<\/strong> from worsening.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/oceans-and-fisheries.ec.europa.eu\/fisheries\/rules\/fishing-quotas\/tacs-and-quotas-2025_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Commission&#8217;s proposal<\/a> is part of the so-called <strong>multi-annual management plan<\/strong> (MAP) of the <strong>demersal stocks in the Western Mediterranean<\/strong>, which covers those fish species living in the deepest part of the water basins.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">The Map adopted in 2019 introduced a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">fishing effort regime<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0for trawlers that aims for a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">40 per cent reduction until 2025,<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0when the transitional phase will end.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Next January, therefore, the permanent phase will begin, in which the new <strong>Maximum Sustainable Yield (MSY)\u00a0<\/strong>intervals, i.e., a sustainable fishing strategy that aims to achieve the highest long-term, predictable catch from a stable and &#8220;balanced&#8221; environment by indicating a maximum value beyond which the productivity of the stock is assumed to decline. The <strong>new fishing opportunities<\/strong> will be determined on the basis of recommendations to be produced by the <strong>Scientific, Technical, and Economic Committee for Fisheries (STECF)<\/strong>, an advisory body that provides opinions to the Community Executive.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PD and Lega united in opposition to the EU executive&#8217;s proposal to reduce fishing quotas in the Western Mediterranean.
