Also, because\u00a0<strong>Putin &#8220;is weakened&#8221; due to the war and &#8220;the poor state of the economy,&#8221;<\/strong>\u00a0continuing the wars could have &#8220;much bigger and worse effects,&#8221; Trump said in an interview with the <a href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2024\/12\/08\/us-news\/trump-calls-on-russia-to-enact-ceasefire-in-ukraine-after-assad-is-toppled-in-syria\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>New York Post<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Even for the <strong>NATO allies<\/strong>, the message is still the same: If you don&#8217;t do your part in terms of military spending, don&#8217;t count on Washington&#8217;s protection.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Ukrainian President <strong>Volodymyr &#8220;Zelensky<\/strong> and Ukraine would like to make a deal and <strong>stop the madness<\/strong>,&#8221; the New York-based <i>tycoon<\/i> wrote on his Truth platform, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2024\/12\/09\/trump-urges-immediate-ceasefire-in-ukraine-and-suggests-nato-role-rethinking\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after having suggested<\/a> in an interview aired last weekend that it is &#8220;likely&#8221; that his administration\u2014whose formal inauguration is scheduled for Jan. 20\u2014would <strong>reduce military aid to Kyiv<\/strong>. &#8220;<strong>There should be an immediate ceasefire, and negotiations<\/strong> should begin,&#8221; he wrote, adding, &#8220;I know Vladimir (Putin, ed) well. It is his time to act. China can help. The world is waiting.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Last weekend, Trump met\u00a0Zelensky in Paris (where he was to attend the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral after the fire that devastated it in 2019) in the presence of his host, French President <strong>Emmanuel Macron<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">During a\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">trilateral meeting at the Elys\u00e9e Palace<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, the transalpine head of state sought to\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2024\/dec\/08\/trump-calls-ceasefire-ukraine-casualty-figures\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">act as a facilitator<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0between the two, between whom a direct and stable channel has not yet been established despite the fact that contacts have been in place since at least last summer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The Ukrainian president described the talks with the future White House tenant as &#8220;constructive&#8221; but wanted to reiterate for the umpteenth time that <strong>peace with Russia will have to be &#8220;just and solid,&#8221;<\/strong> a peace &#8220;that the Russians cannot destroy in a few years as they have done before,&#8221; he said in the aftermath of the meeting. The future president did not disclose whether he has already <strong>personally contacted Putin<\/strong> (&#8220;because I don&#8217;t want to do anything that would hinder negotiations,&#8221; he explained). Still, it is clear that, at least in the circles of what will be the next administration, preparations to arrive at a <strong>cessation of hostilities<\/strong> as soon as possible are already underway, at least judging by the levity with which\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">the next president of the\u00a0<em>States <\/em>is addressing the topic<\/span>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, at least officially, <strong>no concrete plans<\/strong> have been released on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/08\/eu-tries-to-understand-what-will-happen-to-ukraine-after-trumps-re-election\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">how you might get<\/a> to such an outcome. Considering both the impatience that Trump seems to have and the <a href=\"https:\/\/english.kyodonews.net\/news\/2024\/12\/2b04e9c88c84-urgent-n-korean-troops-in-russia-killed-zelenskyy-tells-kyodo-news.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recent remarks<\/a> of Zelensky, who admitted for the first time since the war began in February 2022 that <strong>it will be impossible for Ukraine to regain control of occupied regions militarily<\/strong>, many observers imagine that any negotiating plan to end the conflict would involve a <strong>cession (at least temporarily) of part of the <em>oblasts<\/em> that ended up under Russian occupation<\/strong>\u2014without considering Crimea, unilaterally annexed by Moscow in 2014.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The U.S. president-elect is already talking about peace agreements between Moscow and Kiev, though without uncovering his own cards.
