Some progress has been made, but little, at a slow pace, and the country is still\u00a0not women-friendly. <a href=\"https:\/\/eige.europa.eu\/gender-equality-index\/2024\/IT\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">L&#8217;indice <\/a><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">of gender equality published by the European Institute for Equality leaves no room for doubt: Italy is far from being a model country. The scale for the fight against the gender gap is measured with a score from 0 to 100. For Italy, the figure stands at 69.2, below the EU average of 71, putting the country in 14th place out of 27 for level of equality.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>The low participation of women in politics weighs heavily<\/strong>.<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>The report notes that, despite a woman at the head of the government, Giorgia Meloni, &#8220;the percentage of women among senior and junior ministers has slightly decreased from 31 per cent in 2023 to 30 per cent in 2024.&#8221;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0On a more general level, the document&#8217;s Italian chapter continues, women hold 34 per cent of parliamentary seats in 2024 (up 1 per cent from 2023, and &#8220;<strong>remain under-represented at the regional level (24 per cent)<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span><\/span> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-412702 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/Imagoeconomica_1351331-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Then, there is an issue that borders on discrimination in the labour market.\u00a0<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Italy is criticised that &#8220;<strong>Women continue to be the least likely to be employed full-time.<\/strong>&#8220;<\/span>\u00a0It means that the &#8220;good&#8221; contract is the preserve of men. In 2022, the full-time equivalent employment rate for women was only 32 per cent compared to 52 per cent for men.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This remains the lowest percentage of women employed full-time in the EU,&#8221; and\u00a0Italy &#8220;has not shown significant progress in this area.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In addition, &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Italian women continue to experience the shortest expected working life in the EU,&#8221; with 25 years of service, whether public or private, standing nine years below the EU average (34 years).\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">This a figure that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/26\/italy-gender-gap-ue-women\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">confirms once again the all-Italian &#8220;gender gap&#8221; when it comes to gender equality and employment<\/a>, only assumed and all to be built.<\/span>\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>For Italy, all this translates into the need for serious reforms and policies of full equality. &#8220;<strong>We<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0must not let gender gaps persist<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/strong>.&#8221; stressed the Commissioner for Equality and Crisis Management, <strong>H<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>adja Lahbib<\/strong>. Italy and those with even worse indices are warned, &#8220;The data from the Gender Equality Index will contribute to my work to prepare our Roadmap for Women&#8217;s Rights and the Post-2025 Gender Equality Strategy.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>European equality index highlights delays for full gender equality.
