But Hungary warns: &#8220;We will veto&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; In Brussels, <strong>the loyal ally of the pro-Russian ruling party in Georgia, Georgian Dream, is Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>&#8216;s Hungary. While on the streets of Tbilisi &#8211; now in its fourteenth consecutive day of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/29\/protests-soar-in-georgia-after-government-halts-path-to-eu-membership\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">protests<\/a> against the government&#8217;s decision to suspend the EU accession process &#8211; law enforcement violence continues, the European Union warns that it will &#8220;consider further measures&#8221; against those responsible for the democratic backsliding and repression. However,\u00a0Budapest promises: &#8220;We will veto&#8221; any sanctions on Georgian officials.<\/p>\n<p>Tensions in the Caucasian republic have been sky-high since <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/28\/georgia-elections-ruling-pro-russians-claim-victory-amid-allegations-of-serious-voting-irregularities\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">October 26,<\/a>\u00a0when the ruling party in office since 2012 won elections that local and international observers denounced as irregular and the head of state, the pro-European <strong>Salom\u00e9 Zourabichvili<\/strong> as illegitimate.\u00a0The situation deteriorated definitively\u00a0two weeks ago, on November 28, following the decision by\u00a0Prime Minister <strong>Irakli Kobakhidze<\/strong> <strong>not to include the issue of negotiations to join the EU on the government&#8217;s agenda &#8220;before the end of 2028.&#8221;\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to the bulletin released yesterday (December 10) by <a href=\"https:\/\/transparency.ge\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Transparency International Georgia<\/a>, in thirteen days of protests,\u00a0<strong>450 people were arrested, and over\u00a0300 protesters suffered violence<\/strong> and mistreatment, with over\u00a080 requiring hospital treatment. For both administrative and criminal charges, judges &#8220;make decisions solely based on\u00a0police officers&#8217; testimonies.&#8221; Several reports from international organizations &#8211; accompanied by audiovisual material &#8211; indicate that &#8220;<strong>masked groups affiliated with the Georgian Dream party<\/strong> have been used to attack protesters and journalists.&#8221; Since November 28, 92 incidents of violence against journalists have been documented. However, \u00a0<strong>Kallas is unlikely to be able to count on Budapest<\/strong> to call out the Tbilisi government.
