Land border checks to be lifted from Jan. 1, 2025"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Romania and Bulgaria<\/strong> will\u00a0be fully part of the Schengen area, the area of free movement that allows more than 400 million people to move around 29 countries without border controls. Schengen is shifting its eastern borders. Bulgaria borders Turkey to the east and is part of the Balkan migration route. Romania shares a 500-kilometer border with Ukraine and as much with Moldova.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Various NGOs, in particular, have accused Bulgarian authorities of <strong>violently pushing back migrants <\/strong>coming from Turkey,\u00a0with alleged complicity of Frontex agents. According to the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/asylumineurope.org\/reports\/country\/bulgaria\/asylum-procedure\/access-procedure-and-registration\/access-territory-and-push-backs\/#_ftnref10\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Council for Refugees and Exiles <\/a>(ECRE), in 2023 alone,\u00a0there were 9,897 alleged pushbacks affecting 174,588 persons.
