On the one hand, they look to Asia because Isis-Daesh is based in Afghanistan and &#8220;present in neighbouring areas.&#8221;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0The problem is that Afghanistan is now under the control of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2022\/01\/21\/ue-inizia-ristabilire-presenza-minima-afghanistan-no-riconoscimento-regime-talebano\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Taleban, and\u00a0the EU is having a hard time dealing with them<\/a>. A difficult interlocutor, and talking to the government for security reasons means recognizing the Islamic regime.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Moreover, against this backdrop, the EU Council emphasizes how &#8220;<strong>the ongoing crisis in the Middle East is driving radicalization around the world<\/strong>&#8221; with all the related\u00a0fallout\u2014starting with the region. That is why the gathering of foreign ministers confirms &#8220;the EU&#8217;s unwavering commitment to the fight against terrorism in Iraq and Syria.&#8221;\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">A non-random reference to the country just liberated from former President Bashar al-Assad, but by forces\u2014the Islamist\u00a0<strong>Hay&#8217;at Tahrir al-Sham\u00a0<\/strong>(HTS) militia\u2014that\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/12\/09\/ue-dittatura-siria-assad\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU recognizes as a terrorist organization<\/a>.<\/span>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/12\/10\/kallas-ue-siria-rifugiati\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU wants to work on stabilizing Syria, more out of fear of migrants marching to Europe<\/a> than for the values so much flaunted\u00a0in recent months.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">It is precisely the migration issue that also fuels renewed fears for the continent on the southern shore of the Mediterranean. &#8220;<strong>The<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong> terrorist threat in Africa is increasing, with Da&#8217;esh, al-Qaeda, their affiliates<\/strong> and other non-state actors exploiting local conflicts and social, political, and economic fragility,&#8221; warned the ministers, who stressed that &#8220;of particular concern is the deteriorating security situation in the Sahel, with spillover effects on the West African coastal states and potentially on North Africa.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Foreign ministers&#8217; admission in security conclusions.
