Brussels – Defense, the great unknown. From an industrial and policy perspective, Europe\u00a0is significantly lagging. The European Parliament’s research service uses a comparison that is as\u00a0simple as it is telling to highlight the challenge for the EU. “US-based Lockheed Martin<\/strong>, the world’s largest defense contractor, generates almost as much revenue (around \u20ac60 billion) as the entire EU defense industry sector<\/strong> (estimated at around \u20ac70 billion).”This\u00a0situation requires\u00a0immediate action, and it is no coincidence that the defense dossier is part of the 10 priorities to look at in 2025.<\/a><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

A single company, no matter how large, produces as much as all\u00a0European companies in the sector. A divide that\u00a0EU national governments themselves fuel. According to analysts of the European Parliament, between February 2022 and June 2023,\u00a0after Russia’s large-scale invasion of Ukraine, “78 percent\u00a0of acquisitions of defense equipment by EU Member States came from outside the EU, with the US accounting for 63 percent of this total.<\/strong>“<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

\"Difesa<\/a><\/p>\n

The EU is falling behind and not doing much to catch up — this is\u00a0the stark\u00a0summary that the working paper for MEPs outlines. However,\u00a0things are already moving forward. Pending consolidated figures estimates indicate that by the end of 2024, the 27 member states will\u00a0<\/strong>reach a combined defense budget (i.e., spending and investment) of \u20ac326 billion, representing an increase of about \u20ac108 billion or 50 percent from 2021<\/strong> spending. It\u00a0means “significantly more\u00a0defense investment than in previous decades.”<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

New momentum is\u00a0needed.\u00a0Brussels is well\u00a0aware of this, and Defense Commissioner Andrius Kubilius has already started the work of\u00a0moral suasion\u00a0to raise 200 billion of additional resources<\/a>. The\u00a0political and financial persuasion campaign is all the more crucial given the\u00a0reluctance of the usual players\u00a0to embrace forms of common debt to stimulate a\u00a0sector that has become increasingly central to the twelve-star agenda.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
