During a packed press conference at his Mar-a-Lago residence, the New York-based tycoon made <strong>some geo-economic remarks that elicited immediate reactions<\/strong> from the U.S.&#8217;s European and South American partners, starting with Denmark, Canada, and Panama.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The face-to-face meeting staged yesterday (Jan. 7) between <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>, who will be sworn in as the <strong>47th president of the United States<\/strong> next Jan. 20, and reporters in the setting of the Republican politician&#8217;s famous residence in <strong>Mar-a-Lago, Florida<\/strong>, lasted about an hour and a half. Already during his <strong>first term<\/strong>, he had publicly suggested that Washington should <strong>buy its overseas territory<\/strong> from Copenhagen, an offer categorically rejected by the Danish government, which, now as then, has reiterated that <strong>Greenland belongs to its inhabitants<\/strong>. The prime minister of the world&#8217;s largest island (on which more than 56,000 inhabitants live), <strong>Mute Egede<\/strong>, reiterated that his government <strong>is pushing for independence<\/strong> from Denmark but also made it clear that Greenland&#8217;s territory &#8220;<strong>is not for sale<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For President-elect Trump, that territory (located in North America but\u00a0<strong>historically controlled by the Scandinavian crowns<\/strong>) has a <strong>crucial strategic value<\/strong>, as it would allow <strong>tracking the movements of Chinese and Russian ships in the upper Atlantic<\/strong>. A U.S. radar base has been on the island since the Cold War. &#8220;I&#8217;m talking about protecting the free world,&#8221; he told reporters. Also in the Greenlandic subsurface are <strong>important reserves of rare earths<\/strong>, critical to the green and digital transition, as well as <strong>natural gas and oil fields<\/strong> that may soon become explorable due to global warming.<\/p>\n<h3 id='european-reactions'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">European reactions<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">The responses from the other side of the Atlantic were not long in coming. European People&#8217;s Party (EPP) MEP <strong>Tomas Tob\u00e9<\/strong> shared on X the words of Danish Prime Minister <strong>Mette Frederiksen<\/strong> that &#8220;Greenland belongs to the Greenlanders&#8221; and &#8220;is not for sale.&#8221;<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Respect for the territorial integrity of all states is fundamental. Important in these strange and uncertain times that the other Nordic countries and entire EU clearly stands behind Denmark. <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/StrongerTogether?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#StrongerTogether<\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/8IrKvftbBw\">pic.twitter.com\/8IrKvftbBw<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Tomas Tob\u00e9 (@tomastobe) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/tomastobe\/status\/1876925068267110862?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 8, 2025<\/a>#<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;<strong>There is no question of the EU allowing other countries<\/strong>, whoever they may be, <strong>to attack its sovereign borders<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.france24.com\/en\/europe\/20250108-france-warns-trump-against-threatening-eu-sovereign-borders-after-greenland-comments\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued<\/a> French Foreign Minister <strong>Jean-No\u00ebl Barrot<\/strong>. &#8220;If you ask me if I think the United States will invade Greenland, my answer is no,&#8221; he added while wondering if &#8220;we have entered an era that sees the return of survival of the fittest, then the answer is yes.&#8221; &#8220;<strong>We need to wake up, build our strength<\/strong>&#8221; at the European level, he concluded.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">From Berlin, outgoing German Chancellor <strong>Olaf Scholz<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/germany-scholz-trump-denmark-greenland-792cf697a69c0f17291dc6a18aba1355\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">declared<\/a> that Trump&#8217;s comments are <strong>generating &#8220;misunderstanding&#8221; among European leaders<\/strong>, reiterating that the principle of <strong>inviolability of borders and state sovereignty applies to every country<\/strong> and is &#8220;a fundamental principle of international law and an essential part of what we call Western values.&#8221; The co-chair of the European Greens, <strong>Vula Tsetsi<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/europeangreens.eu\/news\/trump-threatening-greenland-is-madness\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">branded<\/a>\u00a0 Trump&#8217;s statements as &#8220;<strong>imperialistic<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mouth shut, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/01\/08\/wait-and-see-brussels-keeps-mum-over-trumps-military-threats-against-greenland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">at least for the moment<\/a>, at the <strong>European Commission<\/strong>. From the Berlaymont Palace in Brussels, no one wants to blurt out what measures the EU executive or individual member states should take to deal with the actions speculated by the president-elect: &#8220;<strong>Let&#8217;s all tone it down<\/strong>,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/audiovisual.ec.europa.eu\/en\/video\/I-265823\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">urged<\/a> the spokesman for Trade <strong>Olof Gill<\/strong>, while chief spokeswoman <strong>Paula Pinho<\/strong> assured that Greenland enjoys the <strong>military mutual assistance clause enshrined in Article 42.7 of the EU Treaty<\/strong>, but that threats of invasion are for the time being <strong>exclusively &#8220;theoretical&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='da-panama-al-canada'  id=\"boomdevs_3\">Da Panama al Canada<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\">As for the <strong>Panama Canal<\/strong>, its sovereignty &#8220;<strong>is not negotiable<\/strong> and is part of our history of irreversible struggle and conquest,&#8221; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/c79191d9xreo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">made clear<\/a> Foreign Minister <strong>Javier Mart\u00ednez-Acha<\/strong>, adding that &#8220;the only hands managing the canal are Panamanian and that is how it will remain,&#8221; in reference to Trump&#8217;s insinuations that it was <strong>Chinese military<\/strong> that managed the stretch of sea (managed for decades by Washington and handed over to Panama in 1999). Mart\u00ednez-Acha also denied that the tycoon had made his government <strong>a pecuniary offer to purchase the infrastructure<\/strong>, which is of crucial importance to global trade.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">No army, however, to <strong>take over Canada<\/strong>. Trump suggested that this should soon <strong>become &#8220;the 51st state&#8221; of the Star-Spangled Union<\/strong>. The future U.S. president says that to annexe Ottawa, Washington will only resort to &#8220;<strong>economic force<\/strong>.&#8221; The\u00a0proposal was rejected by\u00a0resigning Canadian Premier <strong>Justin Trudeau<\/strong>, according to whom the likelihood of his country joining the United States is <strong>the same as &#8220;a snowball&#8217;s chance\u00a0\u00a0in hell.&#8221;<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">There isn&#8217;t a snowball&#8217;s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Workers and communities in both our countries benefit from being each other&#8217;s biggest trading and security partner.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Justin Trudeau (@JustinTrudeau) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau\/status\/1876712025725796712?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">January 7, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Trump\u2014who has often referred to the prime minister as a &#8220;<strong>governor<\/strong>&#8220;\u2014has returned to the subject several times in recent weeks, at least since Trudeau and his Finance Minister <strong>Dominic LeBlanc<\/strong> dined with him at Mar-a-Lago of all places over Thanksgiving weekend.
