{"id":415798,"date":"2025-01-09T12:35:16","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T11:35:16","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/01\/09\/aumento-prezzi-gas-preoccupa-bce\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T14:54:46","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T13:54:46","slug":"ecb-concerned-about-rising-gas-prices-17-7-percent-since-october","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/09\/ecb-concerned-about-rising-gas-prices-17-7-percent-since-october\/","title":{"rendered":"ECB concerned about rising gas prices: &#8220;+17.7 percent since October&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; <strong>Gas and new price increases are starting to worry the European Central Bank<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/press\/economic-bulletin\/html\/eb202408.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> The Economic Bulletin<\/a> includes a set of warnings and reminders that are not exactly new: geopolitical tensions, uncertainties that may affect growth rates, questions related to Donald Trump&#8217;s return to the White House, the call for reforms for eurozone governments.\u00a0The new and topical element is the focus on energy prices.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;<strong>European gas prices have risen by 17.7% since the October Governing Council meeting, <\/strong>driven by both supply and demand factors,&#8221; according to the ECB monthly monitor.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0&#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">On the supply side,<strong> the increase can largely be attributed to the impending<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/01\/02\/stop-gas-russo-ucraina-ue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">expiration of the gas transit agreement between Ukraine and Russia<\/a> at the end of 2024.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The economic bulletin does not refer to speculation.\u00a0It notes an upward fluctuation in prices that could have significant repercussions for the economy and productivity of EU countries using the single currency. The ECB&#8217;s focus on gas market developments is no surprise given the harsher-than-expected winter and renewables that have missed\u00a0expectations.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;On the demand side, <strong>reduced wind farm output in November in Europe has led to increased reliance on gas-fired power generation<\/strong>,&#8221; the economic bulletin added.\u00a0<\/span><\/span>&#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">This, coupled with <strong>cold weather, has significantly decreased gas storage levels<\/strong> across Europe, further contributing to rising gas prices.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Events risk overturning all calculations made so far in Frankfurt. &#8220;Based on assumptions of declining oil and gas prices, energy inflation is likely to remain negative until the second half of 2025 and to stay subdued thereafter,&#8221; according to the bulletin.<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> <strong>Assumptions of price decline are currently\u00a0being disproven.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Frankfurt&#8217;s calculations were based on assumptions of falling prices that are currently not there.
