{"id":415829,"date":"2025-01-09T16:34:26","date_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:34:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/01\/09\/agricoltura-ue-accordi-scambio-fanno-bene\/"},"modified":"2025-01-09T16:48:42","modified_gmt":"2025-01-09T15:48:42","slug":"eu-citizens-free-trade-agreements-are-good-for-agriculture","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/09\/eu-citizens-free-trade-agreements-are-good-for-agriculture\/","title":{"rendered":"EU citizens, free trade agreements are good for agriculture"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; Mercosur or Ceta, whatever they are called or whoever they are signed with, <strong>for Europeans, free trade agreements are good for agriculture and good for their wallets.<\/strong> The <a href=\"https:\/\/europa.eu\/eurobarometer\/surveys\/detail\/3226\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">special Eurobarometer survey<\/a> dedicated to the common agricultural policy contains a message that will not please those who persist in saying &#8220;no&#8221; to signing trade agreements.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">Especially several agricultural representative organisations condemning these understandings will be surprised at the disconnect with citizen-consumers, who instead promote initiatives such as the one just concluded by the European Commission,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/06\/eu-mercosur-agreement-inflames-tempers-red-card-for-farmers-and-climate-activists-strong-concerns-even-in-eu-parliament\/\" target=\"_blank\">the signing with South American countries that inflames politics and the world of agriculture, European as well as Italian<\/a>.<\/span>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Yet men and women in the European Union have no doubts. Between those who say that free trade is &#8220;very positive&#8221; (15 per cent) and those who consider it &#8220;rather positive&#8221; (56 per cent), practically <strong>seven out of ten (71 per cent) consider&nbsp;it good for the consumer\u2014and thus for their shopping carts\u2014to have arrangements with third countries<\/strong> to buy agri-food products and food to put on the table.&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">This figure increases in the case of <strong>Italian respondents, who are among the most enthusiastic about<\/strong><\/span><strong>&nbsp;free trade agreements<\/strong>. Overall, 80 per cent of people heard by Eurobarometer promote understandings such as the one with Mercosur just finalized (but still all to be approved by member states).<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-415822 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/eurobarometro-agricoltura.png\" width=\"821\" height=\"437\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/eurobarometro-agricoltura.png 821w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/eurobarometro-agricoltura-300x160.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/eurobarometro-agricoltura-768x409.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/eurobarometro-agricoltura-750x399.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 821px) 100vw, 821px\" \/>&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">While farmers criticize and denounce free trade agreements for negative fallout,&nbsp;<strong>two-thirds of EU citizens (66 per cent) believe that having agreements is good for European agriculture,<\/strong>&nbsp;between those who say it very strongly (13 per cent) and those who say it overall in a positive way (53 per cent).<\/span>&nbsp;Once again, the Italians make their voices heard here: trade is good for EU agriculture for 78 per cent of respondents.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Eurobarometer survey: for men and women of Europe, trade agreements benefit the primary sector and shoppers&#8217; wallets.
