Brussels – With just over a month to go before early elections, the xenophobic and supremacist AfD ultra-right has once again ended up at the centre of a political storm<\/strong> in Germany.\u00a0This time, controversy erupted around the\u00a0<\/span>distribution among immigrant communities in Karlsruhe<\/strong>\u00a0by the local branch of the post-Nazi party of\u00a0<\/span>fliers depicting fake airline tickets<\/strong>\u00a0to urge recipients to leave the country.<\/span><\/p>\n

The episode brought today<\/a> (Jan. 14) to the opening of a file against unknown persons for “suspected incitement to racial hatred<\/strong>” by the city’s police, whose mayor accused the AfD of fomenting fear among communities<\/strong>, particularly minorities.<\/p>\n

The flyers, found in the mailboxes of some neighbourhoods inhabited mostly by immigrants<\/strong>, explicitly refer to the “remigration”\u00a0<\/strong>plans proposed by the far-right party\u2014under which tens of thousands of immigrants were to be deported, and in opposition to which the Germans had taken to the streets<\/a> a year ago\u2014and are drawn like airline tickets, with the gate (AFD), the date of the flight (next February 23, election date<\/a>) and the destination, i.e. a “safe country of origin.”<\/p>\n

Marc Bernhard<\/strong>, AfD deputy from Karlsruhe, admitted on public TV that 30,000 flyers<\/strong> were printed, then distributed among campaign stalls and placed in mailboxes in some homes<\/strong>, but denied that residents with “foreign names” were specifically targeted. The co-chair of the party’s regional section, Markus Frohnmaier<\/strong>, praised “the creative action of the local sections<\/strong>.” On the Karlsruhe AfD website a page appeared<\/a> (also taken up on X) in which an attempt is made to give explanations of the controversial communications move.<\/p>\n

A similar campaign had been organised, in 2013, by the then NPD<\/strong>, another German neo-Nazi party that now calls itself Die Heimat<\/i><\/strong> (“the homeland”) and which 12 years ago directed immigrant candidates for the Bundestag<\/i> with fake airline tickets<\/strong> to discourage them. Both of these campaigns, moreover, are reminiscent of a similar operation orchestrated by the NSDAP<\/strong>, the National Socialist party of Adolf Hitler<\/strong>, which offered leaflets imitating one-way travel documents to Jerusalem<\/strong> to the Jews of Germany.<\/p>\n

The AfD, which\u00a0recently nominated\u00a0<\/a>the federal\u00a0Alice Weidel<\/strong>\u00a0co-chair as the\u00a0candidate for the chancellery<\/strong>\u00a0in a historically unprecedented move,\u00a0has around 20 per cent support, according to polls.<\/strong>\u00a0This would secure her second place after the centre-right\u00a0Christian Democratic Union (CDU\/CSU)<\/strong>and ahead of the\u00a0Social Democrats (SPD)\u00a0<\/strong>of outgoing chancellor\u00a0Olaf Scholz<\/strong>. Against the post-Nazi ultra-right, however, it should hold up the\u00a0cordon sanitaire of the democratic forces<\/strong>, which have promised not to entertain coalition negotiations with it.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
