To do its part, the EU <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_265\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">announced<\/a> today (Jan. 16) to have committed <strong>an initial budget of 1.9 billion from the 2025 EU budget for humanitarian assistance<\/strong>. Of this, more than half a billion will go to Africa.<\/p>\n<p>As explained by the EU Commissioner for Preparedness, Crisis Management, and Equality, Belgian <strong>Hadja Lahbib<\/strong>, the funding will support the action of the EU&#8217;s partners on the ground: &#8220;The UN family, the Red Cross\/Red Crescent family, international and local governments and non-governmental organizations.&#8221; In addition to the 605 million directed to Africa\u2014<strong>510 to sub-Saharan and West Africa and 95 to North Africa and Yemen<\/strong>\u2014the second largest recipient will be the<strong> Middle East<\/strong>, where &#8220;the humanitarian situation remains extremely acute and fragile, especially in Gaza.&#8221; Also in Syria, as we wait to understand what direction the new power in Damascus will take. In Latin America, an initial allocation of \u20ac113 million will be allocated to address the domestic and regional impact of the crisis in <b><strong>Venezuela<\/strong><\/b>, the needs of the most vulnerable people affected by armed conflict in <b><strong>Colombia<\/strong><\/b>, the complex crisis in <b><strong>Haiti<\/strong><\/b><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>and the violence in <b><strong>Central America, Mexico, and Ecuador<\/strong><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">For <b><strong>Ukraine<\/strong><\/b>, now in its third year of war, the initial planned allocation is <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_25_244\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u20ac140 million<\/a>. Another \u20ac8 million is earmarked for humanitarian projects in neighbouring <b><strong>Moldova<\/strong><\/b>. Completig the picture are \u20ac35 million allocated to the <b><strong>Southern Africa and Indian Ocean<\/strong><\/b> region and \u20ac5 million to the <b><strong>Southern Caucasus<\/strong><\/b> <b><strong>and Central Asia<\/strong><\/b>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Lahbib reiterated the EU institutions&#8217; call for &#8220;safe and unhindered access&#8221; to people in need: &#8220;Funding is not enough; we must be able to reach the most vulnerable. And for this,\u00a0<strong>it is urgent that all parties respect international humanitarian law<\/strong>,&#8221; the EU commissioner said. In the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/12\/eu-e1-8-billion-allocated-for-humanitarian-assistance-in-2024-a-quarter-to-gaza-and-the-middle-east\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">past year<\/a>, the EU&#8217;s initial budget for humanitarian assistance was \u20ac1.8 billion.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The European Commission has set aside additional\u00a0<strong>emergency funding <\/strong>in the humanitarian budget for 2025: more than \u20ac295 million is reserved for global interventions to respond to sudden emergencies and unforeseen humanitarian crises that may occur during the year, while about \u20ac110 million will be allocated for horizontal activities, including innovative projects and policy initiatives, such as multi-year programmatic partnerships and response capacity building.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2024\/02\/12\/aiuti-umanitari-bilancio-ue-2024\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Slight increase over last year, when 1.8 billion was planned.
