The\u00a0choice, however, risks antagonizing the United States.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>The first trip of my new Commission will be to India,<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0von der Leyen said at\u00a0the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.weforum.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">World Economic Forum<\/a>\u00a0in Davos. &#8220;We want to strengthen the strategic partnership with the country,&#8221; she admitted. &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">I believe <strong>we should also strive for mutual benefits in our conversation with China,<\/strong>&#8221; she added. They are messages with strong political content directed at a Trump, whom von der Leyen almost challenges when she outlines\u00a0the direction she intends to take. <\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-416696\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india.png\" width=\"800\" height=\"507\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india.png 800w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india-300x190.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india-768x487.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/ue-india-750x475.png 750w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 800px) 100vw, 800px\" \/><\/a><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"> &#8220;Our message to the world is simple: if there are mutual benefits in sight, we are ready to engage with you,&#8221; is her premise.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>If you want to upgrade your clean-tech industries, if you want to upscale your digital infrastructure \u2013 Europe is open for business<\/strong>.&#8221; She presents rather than imposes her agenda because the reality of the situation will matter more than anything else.\u00a0Von der Leyen seems intent on\u00a0closing the door on Trump&#8217;s America, which looks to drilling and traditional fossil fuels, rejecting the EU&#8217;s green and digital approach.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The European Union tries to play the role of the United States, to set conditions, acting as the power it is not. Von der Leyen comes across as\u00a0&#8216;cocky&#8217;. &#8220;If there are mutual benefits in sight, we are ready to engage with you&#8221; reflects the\u00a0same approach as the\u00a0US, and Trump has been crystal clear. It is the EU that needs the US, not vice versa. The president of the European Commission tries to flex her muscles, trying to\u00a0mask the weaknesses of a fragile Europe. However, she cannot deny that the EU lacks\u00a0the economic strength of the United States, nor does it have a subsoil rich in energy and raw materials as other players. So, it can only seek its fortune elsewhere.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">To defend its values in a changing world, the Union\u00a0&#8220;must change the way we act. <strong>We must look for new opportunities wherever they arise,&#8221; von der Leyen cuts short, even if that means moving Europe eastward<\/strong>. &#8220;<span class=\"ryNqvb\">This is the moment to engage beyond blocs and taboos,&#8221; she added. The only card the EU can try to play is that of accountability. &#8220;<strong>W<\/strong><\/span><strong>ith Europe, what you see is what you get<\/strong>,&#8221; the EU Commission president stressed.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We play by the rules. She has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/06\/eu-mercosur-deal-done-von-der-leyens-announcement-negotiations-concluded-partnership-unique-in-the-world\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">closed the trade agreement with Mercosur<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/01\/17\/messico-ue-commercio-chiave-anti-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">updated the free trade agreement with Mexico<\/a>.\u00a0Now, everything is in the hands of national governments; it will be up to them to decide whether these agreements will be ratified or sunk under the threat of votes in national parliaments. The EU is moving, however, in a bid\u00a0not to be crushed by other, certainly more influential, players. It sends a message to them, accompanied by an announcement: <strong>&#8220;Next week, it will present its roadmap<\/strong>&#8221; <strong>for competitiveness<\/strong>, a document that &#8220;will guide us for the next five years.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">It remains to be seen how Europeans will perceive the image of the EU, given the constant reminder of the EU&#8217;s focus on its values. Von der Leyen does it again: &#8220;Our values do not change.&#8221; It is not entirely true. <strong>Wanting to do business with India and China means pretending that these countries do not have interests and ties with Vladimir Putin&#8217;s Russia, which Europe demonizes.<\/strong><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In Davos, the president of the European Commission flexes her muscles and says she is ready to do business where she can. &#8220;Breaking taboos.
