The European Parliament wastes no time and, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20250116IPR26328\/parliament-denounces-the-upcoming-sham-presidential-election-in-belarus\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a>\u00a0adopted today (January 22) by a vast majority, calls on Brussels, member states, and the international community to &#8220;<strong>not recognize the legitimacy of the incumbent dictator<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The nonlegislative text was approved by <strong>567 votes in favour, 25 against, and 66 abstentions<\/strong>. Among those opposed were a large group of non-attached MEPs and six members of the far-right group Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN). In contrast, 23 MEPs from the Patriots (PfE) group and 21 from the European Left, including the <strong>5 Star Movement<\/strong> delegation, abstained. But for the overwhelming majority of the House, <strong>the upcoming presidential election is already &#8220;a farce&#8221;<\/strong>, unveiled by the intensification of human rights violations against regime opponents in the run-up to the election and the presence of four &#8220;pro-forma&#8221; candidates who will challenge Lukashenko.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">In addition to Vladimir Putin&#8217;s longtime ally,\u00a0<strong>Oleg Gaidukevich<\/strong> (Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus), <strong>Alexander Khizhnyak<\/strong> (Republican Party of Labor and Justice), <strong>Sergei Syrankov<\/strong> (Communist Party of Belarus), and independent <strong>Hanna Kanapackaja\u00a0<\/strong>will be\u00a0running for the country&#8217;s leadership. With the exception of the latter, the other three are <strong>leaders of parties that publicly support the Lukashenko regime<\/strong>. They are the only parties pardoned by Lukashenko after the 2020 protest riots, when the Belarusian authorities arrested 65,000 people, shut down more than 1,700 civil society organizations, and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/president.gov.by\/ru\/belarus\/society\/politicheskie-partii?TSPD_101_R0=08eaf62760ab200082b181b4559b021104a487b2a4e6a3df8f0261979f268d51fc59b08d9dc4cdf808a494f81714300007475271ccf2a9df648d961c743615bfe16cb8874b237218ec63473f24005ca4511b9443b471d1310ef90ea6ddbaad6c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">banned<\/a>\u00a0precisely all political parties except the pro-Lukashenko ones.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">MEPs have expressed grave concern about the situation of the <strong>over 1,200 political prisoners in Belarus<\/strong>. According to the Minsk-based human rights centre Viasna, detentions and acts of repression have multiplied in recent months: in November alone, more than 100 people were reportedly arrested on charges of extremism. But in all of 2024, Belarusian authorities have used the iron glove to stifle dissent: <strong>the number of political trials has increased by 50 per cent<\/strong>, with at least 5,890 cases, and 45 journalists are reported to be currently in jail.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 449px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/1734000326376_20241212_EP-177196A_LD1_022-scaled.jpg\" width=\"449\" height=\"299\" \/><figcaption class=\"wp-caption-text\">Belarusian opposition leader in exile, Svetlana Tsikhanouskaya and Roberta Metsola at the European Parliament, 12\/12\/24<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As the election approaches, according to Viasna and the <a href=\"https:\/\/belhelcom.org\/en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belarusian Helsinki Committee<\/a>, a &#8220;<strong>repressive climate of threat, fear, pressure, and persecution<\/strong>&#8221; remains. The Belarusian <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/12\/belarusian-opposition-leader-to-eu-dictators-suddenly-collapse-minsk-headed-for-sham-elections-in-january\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">opposition<\/a> in exile, led by <strong>Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya<\/strong>, has already called this election a self-appointment of Lukashenko.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The text adopted today by the Strasbourg chamber calls on the EU and member countries to &#8220;continue to investigate human rights violations in the country.&#8221; MEPs also stressed Lukashenko regime&#8217;s &#8220;complicity&#8221; in Russia&#8217;s war of aggression against Ukraine and condemned <strong>Minsk&#8217;s &#8220;deliberate subordination&#8221; to Moscow<\/strong>. Finally, the EU Parliament called on Brussels and international partners to &#8220;broaden and strengthen&#8221; sanctions against those responsible for the repression in Belarus.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The European sanctions, adopted progressively from 2021, have been extended until February 28, 2025.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>They have already targeted 287 individuals and 37 entities<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>responsible for repression and intimidation<\/strong>\u00a0against peaceful protesters, opposition members, and journalists, as well as irregularities committed in the election process, torture of detainees, and other human rights violations.<\/span><\/p>\n<aside class=\"gsc-big-numbers gsc-grid\"><\/aside>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">On the list are\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Lukashenko himself, his son Viktor<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, the national security adviser, senior Interior Ministry officials, the prosecutor general and other judiciary members, and several prominent businessmen and businesses that support the regime.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Just days before the Jan. 26 elections, the Strasbourg hemicycle overwhelmingly adopts a resolution calling for strengthening sanctions against Minsk and not recognizing the legitimacy of Putin&#8217;s puppet in office for 30 years.
