Strasbourg – The Defense Committee of the European Parliament (SEDE) has been established. Merely\u00a0a subcommittee until\u00a0today<\/a> (Jan. 23), it has been\u00a0elevated in rank<\/a>\u00a0to address the political and economic priorities decided by the European Union<\/strong> for the coming years. It is a tool for Parliament to better work with (and oversee) the activities of the new European Commissioner for Defense, Lithuania’s Andrius Kubilius<\/strong>, and the EU Council.<\/p>\n

The limited\u00a0presence of Italians<\/strong> among its members stands out (but the reasoning could be very complex\u00a0as one must evaluate the balance of\u00a0all parliamentary committees). There are four\u00a0out of 43, a little less than ten percent, which roughly mirrors the composition of the Parliament. However,\u00a0they are all from the center-right and the extreme right: one from the EPP (Forza Italia), Salvatore De Meo<\/strong>, one from the Patriots (League), Roberto Vannacci<\/strong>, and two from the Conservatives (Fratelli d’Italia), Elena Donazzan<\/strong> and Alberico Gambino<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

A constituent session is scheduled for Jan. 27 when the leadership\u00a0bureau will be elected. On Jan. 29, it will be the turn of the new Public Health Committee, which includes Italians Letizia Moratti (FI), Alessandra Moretti (PD), Michele Picaro and Ruggero Razza (FdI), Ignazio Marino (AVS), Valentina Palmisano and Dario Tamburrano (M5S).
