Brussels calls it &#8220;a blatant affront to democracy&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; The time for &#8220;&#8216;Europe&#8217;s last dictator&#8217; is not over:\u00a0<strong>Alexandr Lukashenko overwhelmingly won, with 86.8 percent of the vote, the elections in Belarus<\/strong>, securing his seventh presidential term. European capitals, led by High Representative for Foreign Affairs, <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>, dismissed the election as a &#8220;farce.&#8221; &#8220;The elections are a blatant affront to democracy. Lukashenko has no legitimacy,&#8221; Kallas and EU Commissioner for Enlargement Marta Kos said in a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eeas.europa.eu\/eeas\/statement-high-representative-vice-president-kaja-kallas-and-commissioner-enlargement-marta-kos-sham_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">statement<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Minsk Election Commission data, voter turnout was 85.7 percent. None of the other four candidates were from the opposition:\u00a0<strong>Oleg Gaidukevich<\/strong> (Liberal Democratic Party of Belarus), <strong>Alexander Khizhnyak<\/strong> (Republican Party of Labor and Justice), and <strong>Sergei Syrankov<\/strong> (Communist Party of Belarus) openly support the regime. Even\u00a0businesswoman <strong>Hanna Kanapackaja<\/strong>, though an independent candidate, sided with Lukashenko several times in recent years and is considered by the opposition in the same way as the others, a front candidate.<\/p>\n<p>The opposition leader in exile, <strong>Sviatlana Tsikhanouskaya<\/strong>, met with EU diplomacy chief Kallas last night. Brussels will continue to &#8220;support and fund civil society, Belarusian democratic forces in exile, and Belarusian culture,&#8221; the EU leader said.\u00a0&#8220;The sham elections in Belarus were neither free nor fair. The people of Belarus deserve a real say in who governs their country,&#8221; Kallas attacked in the statement released\u00a0on the sidelines of the dinner with Tsikhanouskaya, emphasizing the &#8220;<strong>relentless and unprecedented repression of human rights, <\/strong>restrictions to political participation and access to independent media in Belarus, have deprived the electoral process of any legitimacy.&#8221;\u00a0The European Parliament, by a vast majority, approved a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/22\/eu-parliaments-appeal-against-lukashenko-do-not-recognize-the-outcome-of-the-sham-elections-in-belarus\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resolution<\/a>\u00a0last week\u00a0urging the international community to &#8220;not recognize the outcome of the elections.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>According to the Minsk-based human rights center Viasna, there are currently <strong>over 1,200 political prisoners<\/strong> in Belarus. In power since 1994, Lukashenko\u00a0declined to predict\u00a0his future reappointment, adding that he is &#8220;not going to die&#8221; and has no specific successor in mind.
