Brussels – The visit by\u00a0controversial Israeli\u00a0Diaspora Minister<\/strong> to the European capital was\u00a0canceled for\u00a0“security reasons<\/strong>.” Amichai Chikli<\/strong> was supposed to attend an event at the European Parliament related to\u00a0Holocaust\u00a0Remembrance Day. <\/strong>However,\u00a0his inclusion in the program sparked\u00a0controversy among families of hostages<\/strong> held by Hamas because of the minister’s opposition to the\u00a0ceasefire in Gaza<\/strong>. Following\u00a0the news of his absence, the organizers decided to call off\u00a0<\/strong>the event.<\/p>\n

On Jan. 24, a media controversy<\/a>\u00a0erupted over\u00a0the invitation\u00a0extended by MEPs of the European People’s Party (EPP) Lukas Mandl<\/strong> and Andrey Kovatchev<\/strong> to Amichai Chikli<\/strong>, the Tel Aviv Diaspora Minister, as a keynote speaker at an\u00a0event on anti-Semitic hate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

However, yesterday evening\u00a0(Jan. 26), Chikli said<\/a>\u00a0he\u00a0had received “instructions” from the national security apparatus<\/strong> that forced him to cancel his participation<\/strong>. Chikli also said he regretted that “the European capital, Brussels, has become an unsafe place for Jews and Israelis<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

However, EPP press officers confirmed to Eunews<\/em>\u00a0that “the meeting will not take place<\/strong> after Minister Chikli’s cancellation.” The Israeli cabinet member’s participation in the event, scheduled for tomorrow\u00a0evening\u00a0(Jan. 28), had sparked strong reactions<\/strong> from 41 relatives of hostages<\/strong> captured in the Oct. 7, 2023 attacks and 32 Jewish community leaders<\/strong> in the Diaspora.<\/p>\n

They added that the minister was “an inappropriate representative<\/strong>,” as he\u00a0opposed the Israeli cabinet’s approval of the historic ceasefire agreement with Hamas\u00a0<\/strong>– the cornerstone of which is the gradual release of hostages\u00a0<\/strong>– and\u00a0publicly expressed support for several members of the extreme European right<\/strong>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
