As in politics, the rift\u00a0opens up in the labour world: businesses satisfied, unions on the warpath. The\u00a0EU executive&#8217;s competitiveness agenda (<a href=\"https:\/\/commission.europa.eu\/document\/download\/10017eb1-4722-4333-add2-e0ed18105a34_en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Competitiveness Compass<\/em><\/a>) shakes up Europe, first and foremost at the political level. For from the\u00a0<strong>benches of the Socialists (S&amp;D) comes the rejection<\/strong>\u00a0that smacks of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/12\/vice-presidency-to-fitto-divides-center-left-and-ursula-majority\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">new tensions over the alleged &#8216;Ursula majority&#8217;<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>The Compass for Competitiveness <\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>is not suitable for business<\/strong>,&#8221; thunders <strong>Iratxe Perez,<\/strong> president of the S&amp;D Group.<\/span><\/span> &#8220;<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">It is not useful for companies, people, or the environment,&#8221; to the extent that, she criticises, &#8220;we\u00a0have no guarantee that there will be no backtracking on environmental and social standards such as workers&#8217; rights, climate neutrality, sustainability.&#8221; In short, &#8220;this\u00a0communication is an <strong>ideologically biased and very selective interpretation of the Draghi and Letta reports<\/strong>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>Adding to the Socialists&#8217; outcry is the <strong>censure of\u00a0the La Sinistra<\/strong> group, which speaks of &#8220;new austerity,&#8221; and the <strong>criticism of the 5 Star Movement<\/strong> delegation, which speaks of an &#8220;empty box&#8221; and of &#8220;a soup of old neo-liberal recipes that have not worked for either the economy or the citizens already.&#8221; <strong>Valentina Palmisano<\/strong> reiterates: &#8220;Von der Leyen announces a different allocation of cohesion funds. Now, however, they are calling for &#8220;concrete and impactful actions that make meaningful changes for businesses&#8221; as a matter of urgency. A similar call comes from <span lang=\"IT\"><b>Stefan Pan<\/b>, <strong>Confindustria&#8217;s<\/strong>\u00a0Vice President for the European Union: &#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><span lang=\"it\"><span lang=\"IT\">We welcome the competitiveness agenda. Now, the concrete contents of individual legislative acts must meet the ambitions of this agenda: only then will we be able to understand the real intentions of the new Commission.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">On the contrary, the European Trade Union Confederation,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">ETUC<\/strong><strong>, makes it known that it &#8220;cannot support<\/strong> the Competitiveness Compass if it continues to undermine jobs, rights, and standards.&#8221; It specifically criticises &#8220;the explicit call for pension reforms based on longer working lives&#8221; and the proposed corporate scheme that would allow some companies to &#8220;operate outside of national labour law.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span>For Esther Lynch, secretary of ETUC, &#8220;this<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0would be a recipe for disaster, and it threatens to undermine all labour law throughout Europe.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>&#8220;Compass&#8221; designed to boost EU economy and productivity also rejected by M5S and European Left.
