{"id":417483,"date":"2025-01-29T19:11:41","date_gmt":"2025-01-29T18:11:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/01\/29\/georgia-mzia-amaglobeli-sciopero-fame\/"},"modified":"2025-01-30T11:58:45","modified_gmt":"2025-01-30T10:58:45","slug":"the-amaglobeli-case-and-the-war-on-the-independent-press-in-georgia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/29\/the-amaglobeli-case-and-the-war-on-the-independent-press-in-georgia\/","title":{"rendered":"The Amaglobeli case and the war on the independent press in Georgia"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"p1\">Brussels &#8211; The <strong>hunger strike<\/strong> of Georgian journalist <strong>Mzia Amaglobeli<\/strong>, who has been detained by police for more than two weeks, continues, while the <strong>anti-government protests<\/strong> in the Caucasian country, which for months has been in the grip of a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/05\/the-spiral-of-violence-in-georgia-continues-amid-protests-and-repression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">serious political crisis<\/a> that worsens by the week, do not stop. Among the victims is the <strong>freedom of the press<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The affair involving the well-known journalist, founder and editor of the two independent newspapers <strong><i>Batumelebi<\/i><\/strong> and <strong><i>Netgazeti<\/i><\/strong>, on which she chronicles <strong>human rights violations<\/strong> and <strong>corruption<\/strong> in the country, is causing increasing concern both in Georgia and abroad.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Following a court decision in\u00a0<strong>Batumi<\/strong>, a southwestern city overlooking the Black Sea, Amaglobeli has been in\u00a0<strong>custody<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>since Jan. 14, pending a review hearing<\/strong> set by judicial authorities for March 4.<\/span>\u00a0According to Georgian law, pre-trial detention can last up to\u00a0<strong>nine months<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Mzia Amaglobeli, born in\u00a01975, had already suffered\u00a0<strong>administrative detention on the evening of January 11<\/strong> <strong>for posting\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>a sticker<\/strong> on the outside wall of a Batumi police station\u00a0<\/span><strong>promoting a general strike<\/strong> scheduled for the following January 15.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">A few hours later, she was\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">released on bail<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, but on her way out of the station, an\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">altercation<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0ensued with the commander of the police force,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Irakli Dgebuadze<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u2014who was arresting some of Amaglobeli&#8217;s associates gathered in front of the building\u2014during which the journalist\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">slapped the officer<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At that point, police re-arrested Amaglobeli, charging her with <strong>assaulting a public official<\/strong>, punishable by <strong>prison for four to seven years<\/strong>. According to <a href=\"https:\/\/civil.ge\/archives\/653309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">local media<\/a>, the 50-year-old journalist was allegedly <strong>threatened and mistreated while in detention<\/strong>, being denied for several hours permission to <strong>use the toilets<\/strong> and even <strong>drink water<\/strong>, as well as the opportunity to <strong>meet lawyers<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Georgian Public Defender <strong>Levan Ioseliani<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/civil.ge\/archives\/652664\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argues<\/a> that the <strong>evidence put forward\u00a0by the police<\/strong> to justify pre-trial detention is &#8220;<strong>insufficient and irrelevant<\/strong>&#8221; according to the standards set by the Georgian Criminal Code, as well as the relevant case law of the <strong>European Court of Human Rights<\/strong>. On Jan. 20, the <strong>Special Investigation Service (SIS)<\/strong>, which is responsible for investigating crimes committed by public officials, confirmed that it had <strong>opened a file<\/strong>\u00a0based on the <strong>accusations made by Amaglobeli<\/strong> and the <strong>civil society associations<\/strong> that immediately rallied in her support.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the <strong>health condition<\/strong> of the journalist is reportedly <strong>severe and worsening<\/strong>, as since January 11, she has been on a <strong>hunger strike<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/newunionpost.eu\/2025\/01\/29\/mzia-amaghlobeli-detention-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">that has continued for 18 days now<\/a> to protest what she considers to be a politically motivated arrest and which critics of the <strong>Georgian Dream<\/strong> government denounce as yet another evidence of <strong>violent and indiscriminate repression of dissent<\/strong> (which, in a democratic country that is a candidate for EU membership, should instead be protected).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">EU stands in solidarity with Mzia Amaghlobeli on the 17th day of her hunger strike and calls on her immediate release.
