Again. The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecb.europa.eu\/ecb\/decisions\/govc\/html\/index.en.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Central Bank Governing Council<\/a> opens 2025 as it had closed 2024, that is, with a <strong>0.25 per cent<\/strong> reduction in the cost of borrowing money.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>From February 5,<\/strong>\u00a0the interest rate on deposits with the central bank drops to 2.75 per cent, the rate on the main refinancing operations rises to 2.90 per cent, and the interest rate on the marginal lending facility falls to 3.15 per cent.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>It is true that in recent months <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/07\/eurozone-inflation-ends-2024-on-the-rise-2-4-percent-in-december\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">inflation has shown signs of recovery, returning to growth<\/a>; however, it is also true that &#8220;it\u00a0<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">has continued to develop broadly in line with ECB&#8217;s staff projections&#8221;, and in Frankfurt, they remain convinced that <strong>inflation &#8220;is set to return to mid-term target of 2 per cent\u00a0later this year.&#8221;<\/strong> Dynamics that justify further easing of monetary policies adopted so far, giving oxygen to households and businesses struggling with mortgages and loans. The 25 bps rate cut decreed in early 2025 is the fifth overall by the ECB, following the four approved during 2024.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The ECB continues with the course charted by its president, <strong>Christine Lagarde<\/strong>.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/20\/lagarde-2-per-cent-inflation-by-mid-2025-earlier-than-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/03\/20\/lagarde-2-per-cent-inflation-by-mid-2025-earlier-than-expected\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">About a year ago, she announced that the<br \/>\nbenchmark target would be met this year<\/a>\u00a0and\u00a0hopefully well in advance. This is because the state of affairs requires it.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">&#8220;<strong>We had stagnation in the fourth quarter [of 2024]<\/strong>,<strong>\u00a0and growth will remain weak in the short term<\/strong>,&#8221; warns the ECB president. In this context, &#8220;manufacturing continues to contract, and consumer confidence is fragile.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0This is where governments come in. &#8220;Despite everything, the conditions for recovery remain.&#8221; A call for reforms.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Moreover, &#8220;the Trump unknown&#8221; and the possible moves of the U.S. president remain in the background. &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>More friction in global trade could weigh on the euro area growth<\/strong>, dampening exports and weakening the global economy,&#8221; Lagarde further warns. Not only that. &#8220;Greater friction in global trade would make the outlook for inflation in the euro area more uncertain.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The ECB remains cautiously optimistic, and with caution it moves. On this, the Eurotower chairwoman wants to be clear: the possibility of a 50 bps cut &#8220;has never been on the table,&#8221; meaning it has never been an option.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The decision made on the basis of information, which confirms expectations and justifies the choice.
