The time of the &#8220;<strong>cordon sanitaire<\/strong>,&#8221; erected by centrist and pro-Europeanist forces to <strong>keep the far right out of the control rooms<\/strong>, is now a memory, <strong>relegated to the past<\/strong>. While that of a <strong>collaboration between the various souls of the European right<\/strong>, from the (theoretically) moderate to the most extreme, seems ripe. That is, what the <strong>Conservatives<\/strong> have proposed to their <strong>Popular<\/strong> colleagues to redraw the <strong>balances in the Europarliament<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Until a few years ago,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">a collaboration between the different right-wing groups<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0in the Strasbourg EU Parliament\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">would have seemed like science fiction<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">.<\/span>\u00a0The <strong>only thinkable majority<\/strong>, which has ruled the EU for decades, <strong>was the centrist one<\/strong> made up of the <strong>Popular (EPP)<\/strong>, <strong>Socialist (S&amp;D)<\/strong> and <strong>Liberal<\/strong> (first Alde, then <strong>Renew<\/strong>) families, propped up on the outside by the Greens in the last legislature.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But today (Jan. 30), science fiction has become likely, after the <strong>Conservatives and Reformists of the ECR<\/strong>\u2014led in the chamber\u00a0by Melonian <strong>Nicola Procaccini<\/strong> and Polish <strong>Patryk Jaki<\/strong>\u2014<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/lets-kill-the-green-deal-together-with-the-far-right-ecr-tells-epp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have sent<\/a> a <strong>letter to fellow Christian Democrats<\/strong>, reaching out to them to &#8220;<strong>build bridges across party divisions<\/strong> and produce results that benefit European citizens and businesses.&#8221; A change of course in this 10th legislature, then, from the previous one, which, the missive reads, was &#8220;heavily influenced by the direction set by a <strong>centre-left majority<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_417613\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-417613 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Nicola Procaccini\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-2048x1366.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/01\/1737465038155_20250121_EP-178926A_AH1_0232-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-417613\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">ECR&#8217;s Strasbourg co-chair Nicola Procaccini (photo: Alexis Haulot\/European Parliament)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">The Conservatives, at whose summit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/14\/morawiecki-succeeds-meloni-and-takes-ecr-back-to-its-roots-attacks-brussels-and-constraints-on-freedom-of-expression\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">there has been a mid-month turnover<\/a>\u00a0between Italian Prime Minister <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong> and former Polish Prime Minister <strong>Mateusz Morawiecki<\/strong>, have moreover suggested <strong>opening the door to the Patriots (PfE)<\/strong>, the political creature of <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong> who, with 84 deputies, is the <strong>third largest group\u00a0in the hemicycle<\/strong> behind the Populars and Socialists.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is, in fact, a response to the appeal <a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.eu\/article\/far-right-bardellas-letter-to-eu-conservatives-join-my-anti-green-crusade\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">launched only a few days ago<\/a> by <strong>Jordan Bardella<\/strong>, president of France&#8217;s <i>Rassemblement National <\/i>(RN) and PfE group leader in Strasbourg, to the right-wingers in the parliament\u2014including ultra-right wing <strong>Europe of Sovereign Nations (ESN)\u2014<\/strong>to <strong>join forces and finally tear up what remains of the Green deal<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Considering figures, these four <a href=\"https:\/\/results.elections.europa.eu\/en\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">groups combined<\/a> have the <strong>absolute majority of seats<\/strong>: 188 for the EPP, 84 for the Patriots, 78 for the Conservatives, and 25 for the ESN. Of course, in politics, math is not everything. But it must be said that <strong>never before has Europe moved so far to the right<\/strong>, on all levels, which makes, precisely, an eventuality such as the one aired these days less sci-fi.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Not only is there, technically, an alternative <strong>majority in the Parliament<\/strong> (the one renamed &#8220;Venezuela&#8221; and already seen at work on several occasions including, on the Green deal theme, when the EPP <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/11\/14\/eu-vote-on-deforestation-sanctions-alliance-between-epp-and-extreme-right-against-green-deal\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tried watering down<\/a> the <strong>EU regulation on deforestation<\/strong>), but also the <strong>EU executive<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/17\/von-der-leyen-ii-commission-turns-right-consolidates-relationship-between-populars-and-conservatives\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has\u00a0never seen<\/a> such a clear-cut <strong>preponderance of right-wing commissioners<\/strong>, including the first ever in the ECR quota in the person of Vice-President <strong>Raffaele Fitto<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_394906\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-394906 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-1024x648.jpg\" alt=\"agricoltori von der leyen\" width=\"1024\" height=\"648\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-1024x648.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-768x486.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-1536x972.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-2048x1296.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-750x475.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/10\/000_36GC6QC-1140x721.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-394906\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen (photo: Frederick Florin\/Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">And it doesn&#8217;t end there. Even <strong>nationally<\/strong>, the political <i>Zeitgeist<\/i> is blowing strongly to the right. Notwithstanding the governments already in office (from the Italian one, whose majority shareholder is <strong>a party that still has the tricolour flame of the MSI<\/strong> in its symbol, to the Dutch one, into which <strong>the xenophobic and eurosceptic\u00a0far-right of the PVV<\/strong> has entered for the first time, to give two examples), the most recent developments in the two largest member states leave no room for doubt about the trajectory the Old Continent is following.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Berlin, <strong><em>Alternative f\u00fcr Deutschland<\/em><\/strong> (also pumped up by <strong>Elon Musk<\/strong>, who just before performing a <strong>double Nazi salute<\/strong> at <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s inauguration has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/10\/musk-insists-only-the-afd-can-save-germany-livestream-on-x-with-weidel-watched-by-just-200000-viewers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">publicly exalted<\/a> its leader <strong>Alice Weidel<\/strong>) has\u00a0<strong>over 20 per cent support<\/strong> in the polls for next month&#8217;s elections, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/30\/germanys-far-right-cordon-sanitaire-collapses-cdu-and-afd-align-against-migrants\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">just this week<\/a> the likely future chancellor <strong>Friedrich Merz<\/strong> (CDU)\u00a0<strong>made half of Europe shake in their boots<\/strong> by aligning himself (unintentionally, he says) <strong>with the post-Nazi party<\/strong> to get the <i>Bundestag<\/i> to approve a pair of non-binding documents calling for <strong>a crackdown on illegal immigration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In Paris, <strong>Marine Le Pen&#8217;s RN<\/strong>\u2014who came first last summer in both the European and legislative elections (considering the results obtained by individual parties)\u2014<strong>holds the <i>Assembl\u00e9e nationale<\/i><\/strong> in check, where she<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/16\/french-pm-bayrou-survives-no-confidence-vote\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> sets the agenda<\/a> and has already brought down <strong>Michel Barnier&#8217;s government,<\/strong> the shortest government of the Fifth Republic, while continuing\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">to\u00a0<strong>influence transalpine politics heavily<\/strong><\/span>. But, as seen in the vote on deforestation, <strong>the EPP has already dropped the mask with respect to the ambitious climate goals<\/strong> that the EU has given itself over the past five years, under the impetus of Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> who hails from its own ranks. And that now, with the new <strong>Competitiveness Compass<\/strong>, it appears <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/29\/von-der-leyen-presents-the-competitiveness-compass-simplification-is-the-new-eu-watchword\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">equally ready<\/a> to &#8220;re-discuss&#8221; the path to carbon neutrality to <strong>meet the needs of business<\/strong>, under the banner of <strong>simplification<\/strong>, <strong>flexibility,<\/strong> and <strong>pragmatism<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">It is certainly no mystery, after all, <strong>the intense flirtation that has been going on for months between\u00a0the EPP and ECR<\/strong>, carried on as much by von der Leyen as by the head-boss\u00a0of the Populars,\u00a0<strong>Manfred Weber<\/strong>. Since before the European elections last June, <strong>the Christian Democrats had been open to cooperation with &#8220;the healthy elements&#8221; of the conservative family<\/strong>: that is, those who are pro-EU, loyal to NATO, and respectful of the rule of law.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Just as evident is the <strong>feeling between the Commission&#8217;s President and the Italian Prime Minister<\/strong>, who has seen <strong>her (hard) line on immigration<\/strong> finally <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/09\/fortress-europe-melonis-line-on-migrant-repatriation-sets-a-precedent-in-the-eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">make its way to Brussels<\/a>.
