European Commission President <strong>Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> spurs EU ambassadors around the world to a new diplomacy that is pragmatic and responsive to today&#8217;s world.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">&#8220;Much of the world sees Europe as stronger than we see it ourselves, and<strong>\u00a0Europe<\/strong>\u2014insists von der Leyen\u00a0\u2014<strong>has much more influence in this world than we might sometimes think<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span>\u00a0A tool to be used, even in confrontation with lifelong friends.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<div class=\"OvtS8d\">The chairwoman of the community executive is good at not naming names, saying what she has to in a way that does not expose herself but still goes for the kill. <strong>Von der Leyen never calls Donald Trump into question, but what she says lends itself well to being read as a reference to the president of the United States<\/strong>. It is true when she warns the ambassadors that &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>there will be an increased use and threat of instruments of economic coercion, such as sanctions, export controls, and tariffs<\/strong>.&#8221; A clear reference to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/03\/tariffs-eu-leaders-ready-to-respond-to-trumps-trade-measures\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trump and his &#8220;trade bullying&#8221;<\/a>, against which von der Leyen reiterates firmness: &#8220;We prepare for every scenario,&#8221; she says.
