This is what the leaders of the <strong>Green and Left Alliance (AVS)<\/strong>, <strong>Angelo Bonelli<\/strong> and <strong>Nicola Fratoianni<\/strong>, ask their fellow MEPs sitting in the Europarliament. With&nbsp;<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\"><strong>Security Bill&nbsp;1236<\/strong>, they warn that&nbsp;<\/span>the <strong>democratic right to peaceful dissent<\/strong> is <strong>repressed<\/strong>. With&nbsp;its adoption, <strong>Italy will move dangerously close to authoritarian models<\/strong> such as that of Viktor Orb\u00e1n&#8217;s <strong>Hungary<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8220;We are here to denounce <strong>the ideological fury and ferocity<\/strong> of a right-wing that in Italy, in the name of a false security, is <strong>compressing and challenging&nbsp;civil and human rights<\/strong>.&#8221;&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">Green Europe co-spokesperson&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Angelo Bonelli<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;did not mince words in denouncing the &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">authoritarian drift<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&#8221; that the&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Security Bill<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">, currently&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">under discussion in the Italian Senate<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;after its final approval by the House last September, is allegedly imparting on the country.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Therefore, he added this morning (Feb. 4) during a press conference at the European Parliament in Brussels, AVS supports the call of the <strong>National No Ddl Sicurezza<\/strong> <strong>network<\/strong> &#8220;to make sure that <strong>Italy is under special watch<\/strong>&#8221; within the Union. Since <strong>Giorgia Meloni<\/strong>&#8216;s government took office<span style=\"margin: 0px;padding: 0px\">, he said, &#8220;<strong>417 more years of imprisonment<\/strong>&nbsp;have been provided for in our Penal Code&#8221; due to the introduction of 48 new crimes<\/span>.&nbsp;<span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">A worrying dynamic that &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">must concern Europe<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;and make&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">democracies react in a very determined manner<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;to put the defence of civil and human rights at the centre.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">We are here to denounce the ideological ferocity of a right-wing that in Italy, in the name of false security, is reducing&nbsp;and challenging civil and human rights. We support the network <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/NoDdlSicurezza?src=hash&amp;ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">#NoDdlSicurezza<\/a>&#8216;s call for Italy to be under special watch. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/NLY5pjKiXg\">pic.twitter.com\/NLY5pjKiXg<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8211; Angelo Bonelli (@AngeloBonelli1) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AngeloBonelli1\/status\/1886759966863733199?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">February 4, 2025<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p1\">Also along the same lines was the intervention of MEP <strong>Benedetta Scuderi<\/strong>, Bonelli&#8217;s party colleague (<em>Greens\/EFA<\/em> in the Europarliament): &#8220;In Europe, we have already seen what happens when the rights of dissent and protest are not respected in a member state, <strong>as in Hungary<\/strong>,&#8221; she said referring to the <strong>erosion of democratic protections and the rule of law<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/07\/24\/rule-of-law-eu-italy-slovakia-hungary\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the Central European nation<\/a> ruled now for 15 years by the ultranationalist and pro-Russian prime minister <strong>Viktor Orb\u00e1n<\/strong>. And today, he warned, <strong>Italy &#8220;faces the same risks because of a liberticide and authoritarian measure&#8221;<\/strong>. Therefore, he argued, it is Brussels&#8217; task to &#8220;<strong>continue to protect democracy, protest, freedoms, and fundamental rights<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">According to the secretary of the Italian Left,&nbsp;<strong>Nicola Fratoianni<\/strong>, &#8220;the Security Bill&nbsp;operates first on the semantic terrain, <strong>excluding conflict and criminalizing all dissent<\/strong>, then proposes with concrete acts the goal of <strong>expelling any possible protagonism of civil society<\/strong>.&#8221; A position also expressed by MEP <strong>Mimmo Lucano<\/strong> (also elected with AVS, and a member of The Left group in Strasbourg), for whom the measure in question &#8220;strikes<i><strong> <\/strong><\/i><strong>those who want to protest against an unjust world<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The former mayor of Riace highlighted how Bill&nbsp;1236 represents <strong>&#8220;one step further&#8221; than the infamous Security Decrees<\/strong> adopted between 2018 and 2019 by the <strong>Yellow-Green government<\/strong> at the instigation of then Interior Minister <strong>Matteo Salvini<\/strong>. After a slap on the wrist from the <strong>Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe (OSCE)<\/strong>, which as early as last May warned about the &#8220;potential to <strong>undermine the fundamental principles of criminal justice and the rule of law<\/strong>&#8221; of Bill&nbsp;1236, in December came also the stop by&nbsp;the <strong>Council of Europe<\/strong>, the continental organization for the <strong>protection of human rights<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In a letter <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coe.int\/en\/web\/commissioner\/-\/the-commissioner-asks-the-italian-senate-to-amend-the-security-bill-to-safeguard-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">addressed to the senators of the Republic<\/a> so that they would not pass the bill, Human Rights Commissioner <strong>Michael O&#8217;Flaherty<\/strong> recalled that &#8220;<strong>the rights to freedom of expression and peaceful assembly<\/strong>, enshrined in the European Convention on Human Rights (ECHR), <strong>are a cornerstone of democratic society<\/strong>&#8221; and that, if adopted, the Security Bill would &#8220;introduce offenses defined in vague terms&#8221; and create &#8220;room for <strong>arbitrary and disproportionate application of relevant punishments and restrictions<\/strong>,&#8221; which are judged <strong>&#8220;not compatible&#8221; with the democratic standards<\/strong> that European states should respect.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">The&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Antigone Association<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;defined the measure as &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">the greatest attack on freedom of protest in republican history<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">,<\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&#8221; while representing Amnesty International,&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">Ilaria Masinara<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;reiterated the need to counter the spread of a &#8220;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">European model of repression of protest<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&#8221; that labels as&nbsp;<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">terrorists and criminals<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">&nbsp;the<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family)\">&nbsp;peaceful demonstrations of dissent and civil disobedience<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit;color: var(--body-color);font-family: var(--body-font-family);font-weight: var(--body-font-weight)\">.<\/span>&nbsp;A model to which, he pointed out, governments resort under the guise of <strong>public order and security<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For Fratoianni, finally, the <strong>EU Parliament should also discuss<\/strong> another central issue in our domestic public debate: the case of the <strong>discharge<\/strong> of Libyan police commander <strong>Njeem Osama Almasri<\/strong>, on which a <strong>head-on clash is taking place not only between the majority and opposition but also between government and judiciary<\/strong>. &#8220;We would like this discussion to be opened up and there to be attention&#8221; beyond national borders, he explained, since <strong>it is &#8220;a European affair&#8221;<\/strong>.
