This time, the one who returned was <strong>Jens Stoltenberg<\/strong>, the former Norwegian prime minister who, after <strong>a decade at the head of the North Atlantic Alliance<\/strong>, has been re-enlisted in the <strong>Oslo Executive<\/strong> at the Finance Ministry.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The announcement\u00a0came\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/norway-stoltenberg-finance-minister-nato-d15adb51f118e9fd2f7914f508477a8b\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday<\/a> (Feb. 4). The 65-year-old assumed the post of <strong>Minister of Finance<\/strong> in the cabinet of Premier <strong>Jonas Gahr St\u00f8re<\/strong>, who has led the <strong>Labor Party (AP)<\/strong> since 2014, following Stoltenberg&#8217;s appointment (who had led the party since 2002) as <strong>Secretary General of NATO<\/strong>. Stoltenberg said he was &#8220;<strong>profoundly honored<\/strong> to have been called upon to help my country at this critical stage.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Gahr St\u00f8re formed\u00a0a <strong>minority government<\/strong> in October 2021 in coalition with the <strong>Center Party (SP).<\/strong>\u00a0However, on\u00a0Jan. 30, SP\u00a0exited<strong> the executive<\/strong> in disagreement with the Social Democrats regarding <strong>EU energy market rules<\/strong>. This development\u00a0&#8220;freed up&#8221; several ministerial seats, including precisely that of Finance, occupied by SP leader <strong>Trygve Slagsvold Vedum<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Stoltenberg is a <strong>longtime figure in national politics<\/strong>: a member of the <i>Storting<\/i> (Oslo&#8217;s single-chamber parliament) from 1993 to 2017, he was <strong>minister<\/strong> (first of Industry and Energy, from 1993 to 1996, then of Finance between 1996 and 1997, and again now) and <strong>Minister of State<\/strong> (as the Norwegian premier is called) twice (from 2000 to 2001 and then between 2005 and 2013).<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">An honour to be appointed as Minister of Finance of Norway in PM <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/jonasgahrstore?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">@jonasgahrstore<\/a> government. He was\u00a0subsequently\u00a0<strong>reappointed four times<\/strong>, given the need to maintain continuity at the helm of the alliance in the face of the <strong>large-scale invasion of Ukraine<\/strong> launched by Moscow in February 2022.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In that capacity, he earned the nickname &#8220;<strong>Trump&#8217;s Whisperer<\/strong>&#8221; for apparently persuading the US president to <strong>not withdraw Washington from NATO<\/strong> during his first term. Last October, he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/26\/mark-rutte-has-been-named-stoltenbergs-successor-as-nato-secretary-general\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">passed the baton<\/a> of secretary-general to former Dutch Prime Minister <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Norway will\u00a0hold <strong>legislative elections <\/strong>in\u00a0September. Polls show\u00a0the <strong>Labor Party<\/strong><a href=\"https:\/\/politpro.eu\/en\/norway\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0losing<\/a>\u00a0over\u00a07 points (just below 19 percent).
