At any rate, this is what is being leaked from Damascus, as the Elys\u00e9e has not yet officially confirmed the invitation. It is likely that the occasion for the visit will be the <strong>international conference<\/strong> on the future of the Middle Eastern country, which will be held in Paris on February 13.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The fuss caused by the <strong>improvised (and unexpected) fall of the bloodthirsty regime<\/strong> <strong>of<\/strong> <strong>Bashar al-Assad<\/strong>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/12\/09\/eu-welcomes-the-fall-of-the-dictatorship-in-syria-opportunity-for-freedom-and-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overthrown in early December<\/a> by the Salafist militias of <strong>Hay&#8217;at Tahrir al-Sham<\/strong> (HTS, literally &#8220;Committee for the Liberation of the Levant&#8221;) led by <strong>Ahmed al-Shara&#8217;<\/strong>, otherwise known by the nom de guerre <strong>Abu Mohammed al-Jolani<\/strong> (which he, however, asked his interlocutors not to use).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">However, the &#8220;new Syria&#8221; is already enjoying, if not a total reset of its international relations, at least an <strong>important line\u00a0of credit<\/strong>. The Elysee tenant, reads\u00a0an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.elysee.fr\/emmanuel-macron\/2025\/02\/05\/entretien-telephonique-avec-ahmed-al-charaa-president-interimaire-des-autorites-syriennes-de-transition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">official communiqu\u00e9<\/a>, discussed with his counterpart &#8220;the <strong>need to continue the fight against terrorism<\/strong>, for the benefit of the Syrian people and the <strong>security of the French nation<\/strong>,&#8221; expressing Paris&#8217;s readiness &#8220;to <strong>support the transition<\/strong>&#8221; underway and hoping that the latter &#8220;can <strong>fully meet the aspirations of the Syrian people<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">What Macron failed to announce, at least according to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.rfi.fr\/fr\/moyen-orient\/20250206-syrie-ahmed-al-charaa-face-%C3%A0-la-difficile-conciliation-des-attentes-de-ses-partenaires\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">transalpine media<\/a>, is that he <strong>invited al-Shara&#8217;\u00a0<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>to visit Paris<\/strong>\u00a0&#8221; personally in the coming weeks<\/span>.&#8221; This was reported not by\u00a0the Elys\u00e9e but by\u00a0the Syrian presidency office.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">This would be the\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">first meeting with a Western leader<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">, following those with regional neighbours.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">After receiving the\u00a0<\/span><strong>Emir of Qatar<\/strong><span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">, al-Shara&#8217;\u00a0recently\u00a0travelled<\/span><\/span><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0to\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Saudi Arabia<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0and\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Turkey<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3 id='reconstruction-and-migration'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Reconstruction and Migration<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">The new interim president is spreading the message that\u00a0<strong>the two priorities of his new course<\/strong>\u00a0are\u00a0<strong>stability and rebuilding the country<\/strong>. The latter, evidently, will be a gigantic business. On the one hand, Syria\u2014battered by <strong>over a decade of devastating civil war<\/strong>, during which al-Assad did not hesitate to use chemical weapons against his own citizens, and torn by the <strong>experience of the Islamic State<\/strong> (to which, incidentally, the HTS was affiliated for a time)\u2014has historically been a\u00a0<strong>strong\u00a0ally of Vladimir Putin&#8217;s Russia<\/strong>, to which it\u00a0notoriously provided <strong>access to the Mediterranean via the port of Tartus<\/strong>, not far from the border with Lebanon. Turkey&#8217;s new sultan,\u00a0<strong>Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan<\/strong>, for example, intends to continue fighting the <strong>Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF)<\/strong>, a coalition of militias that <strong>control the <i>de facto<\/i> autonomous Rojava<\/strong> region in the northeast of the country. Its main formation is the Kurdish <strong>People&#8217;s Protection Unit (YPG)<\/strong>, which Ankara considers the Syrian branch of the <strong>Kurdistan Workers&#8217; Party (PKK)<\/strong>, classified as a <strong>terrorist organisation<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">In contrast, <strong>for Westerners, the Kurds represent a valuable ally in the fight against jihadist terrorism<\/strong> (at least nominally, given the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/foreignpolicy.com\/2019\/10\/07\/trump-abandons-the-syrian-kurds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resounding volte-face<\/a> of <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s United States in 2019).
