{"id":418258,"date":"2025-02-07T16:25:27","date_gmt":"2025-02-07T15:25:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/02\/07\/georgia-ue-allontanamento-da-democrazia\/"},"modified":"2025-02-07T18:46:36","modified_gmt":"2025-02-07T17:46:36","slug":"georgia-new-eu-warning-further-departure-from-democracy-and-europe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/07\/georgia-new-eu-warning-further-departure-from-democracy-and-europe\/","title":{"rendered":"Georgia, new EU warning: &#8220;Further departure from democracy and Europe&#8221;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; European Union and Georgia are increasingly distant and increasingly at loggerheads. &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">We are witnessing <strong>further steps of Georgian authorities moving away from democratic standards<\/strong>&#8221; and consequently from the EU, is the denunciation of the EU&#8217;s High Representative for Foreign and Security Policy, <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>, in response to the latest developments in the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/06\/28\/georgia-eu-accession-european-council\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Caucasian country whose accession process has been frozen<\/a> precisely because of the deteriorating situation.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">&#8220;The hasty adoption of amendments to the Code on Administrative Offenses, the Criminal Code, and the Law on Assemblies and Demonstrations will have far-reaching effects on Georgian society,&#8221; Kallas further laments.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">These legislative interventions &#8220;will significantly undermine the rights to freedom of expression, freedom of assembly, and freedom of the media.&#8221; Hence the official request to the government in Tblisi to &#8220;suspend these measures, to refrain from further tension, and to await the opinion of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.osce.org\/odihr\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights of the OSCE (ODIHR)<\/a>.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The High Representative reiterates once again: by doing so, Georgia is gambling its chances of EU membership. &#8220;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">These developments mark a serious setback for Georgia&#8217;s democratic development and <strong>do not live up to the expectations of an EU candidate country<\/strong>.&#8221; continued Kallas, who also urged to &#8220;release all journalists, activists, and political detainees who have been unjustly detained.<\/span><\/span> These also include <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/29\/the-amaglobeli-case-and-the-war-on-the-independent-press-in-georgia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mzia Amaglobeli<\/a>, considered in Brussels &#8220;another example of the way the authorities treat journalists and anyone who speaks freely.&#8221; From the EU a new call also for &#8220;a dialogue with all political forces and representatives of civil society.&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>European Union pressure on Georgia will continue. The European Parliament is scheduled <strong>(Thursday, Feb. 13) to vote on a resolution condemning the crackdown on anti-government demonstrations<\/strong> and voices critical of the current Georgian leadership.
