From the correspondent\u00a0in Strasbourg\u00a0<\/em>– Nothing has been defined; rumors and speculation are chasing each other, and\u00a0the EU stands firmly by Kyiv. Nevertheless, “I cannot rule out\u00a0a scenario of a Ukraine that gives up territory” within the European Union. “After all, we have the example of Cyprus.” Thijs Reuten<\/strong>, a Dutch MEP from the Socialist Group (S&D) and member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs<\/a>, is beginning to consider all possibilities\u00a0in the future of the\u00a0Russian-Ukrainian conflict, especially after\u00a0US President Donald Trump’s expectation\u00a0of an early end to hostilities<\/a>.<\/p>\n

To a small group\u00a0of journalists, including Eunews,<\/em> Reuten reiterated that a Ukraine with borders different from the\u00a0internationally recognized ones and thus with territorial loss “would not please me,” just as it would not please many in the European Union. Of course, he adds, “If the Ukrainian government were to accept a redefinition of the borders, then it would be different<\/strong>, but we cannot allow the White House or the Kremlin to decide.” Saying it in other words: “Nothing about Ukraine without Ukraine”. However, we are discussing scenarios, “and I don’t want to speculate.”<\/p>\n

According to Reuten, the line expressed so far on several occasions remains firm: to stand firmly by Ukraine<\/a> without wavering and in such a way as to put Ukraine in a strong position when the time comes for negotiations. For this reason, he\u00a0urges people to “pay little attention to what you hear from the White House<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0focus on what the European Union has to do.”<\/p>\n

Considering what has occurred\u00a0in these years of war, if\u00a0there are lessons to be learned, the Socialist MEP continues, it is that “from a\u00a0military point of view, little has been delivered and late,” as seen with promises regarding\u00a0the supply of one million rounds of ammunition<\/a>. Furthermore, Reuten complained that as the European Union, “we have been too indecisive.”<\/p>\n

From now on,\u00a0we need to improve\u00a0and act sooner\u00a0while reflecting carefully on\u00a0Ukraine. “I am impressed by the progress made\u00a0despite the ongoing war,” Reuten acknowledges, speaking of Kyiv’s EU accession process. Ukraine “has accomplished more\u00a0than Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina have achieved\u00a0in the last ten years.” It is a way to suggest\u00a0that the European promise for Kyiv can be fulfilled,\u00a0even with a Cyprus-style Ukraine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
