Brussels – Frontex data for\u00a0January are crystal clear: while the general trend shows\u00a0a general drop in irregular entries<\/strong> into Europe, arrivals<\/strong> from the Central Mediterranean Route<\/strong> are rising, affecting Italy in particular. This contradicts, at least in part, the Meloni government’s rhetoric about declining arrivals.<\/p>\n

In a statement<\/a>\u00a0published today (Feb. 12), the EU Border and Coast Guard Agency (Frontex)<\/strong>\u00a0said that in\u00a0January,<\/strong> illegal entries into the 27 member states\u00a0dropped by 22 percent<\/strong> compared to the\u00a0same year-earlier period, at 13,420<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The decline was the\u00a0greatest on the Balkan Route,<\/strong> where irregular entries\u00a0dropped by 66 percent <\/strong>compared to a year ago (a total of 658 in the first 31 days of 2025, mainly from China, Egypt, and Turkey). Another significant decrease (-34 percent<\/strong>) was recorded along the West African Route<\/strong> (the one involving the Atlantic coast), which nevertheless remains the busiest <\/strong>and alone accounted for nearly one-third of unauthorized entries in the past 12 months: there were 4,471, mainly from Guinea, Mali, and Morocco. The\u00a0Eastern Mediterranean Route<\/strong> recorded a 21 percent decrease<\/strong>, with 3,491 entries involving primarily people from Afghanistan, Egypt, and Pakistan.<\/p>\n

However, there was an increase<\/strong> mainly on the\u00a0Central Mediterranean route,<\/strong> particularly concerning Italy.\u00a0From January 2024 to January 2025, irregular arrivals rose by 43 percent to 3,275<\/strong>. Most migrants on this\u00a0corridor came from Bangladesh, Pakistan, and Syria. With\u00a0a +135 percent<\/a>\u00a0increase in arrivals compared to the previous year, the\u00a0dynamic seems to contradict the statements of Premier Giorgia Meloni.<\/strong><\/p>\n

According to calculations by the International Organization for Migration (IOM)<\/strong>,\u00a0101 went missing in this dangerous part\u00a0of the sea in the first month of this year<\/a>.\u00a0For the whole of 2024, the figure rises to 1,692.<\/p>\n

Other, albeit more marginal increases (both by 4 percentage points<\/strong>) occurred on the Western Mediterranean Sea route<\/strong> (to Spain), with 843 landings mainly of Algerians, Moroccans, and Syrians, and on the terrestrial route on the northeastern border of the Union<\/strong> (between the Baltics and Poland), where there were 412 reported irregular entries, mainly Russians and Ukrainians.<\/p>\n

Data compiled by the Frontex agency show a drop of more than a fifth compared to the same month in 2024.
