This is the effect of <strong>Donald Trump<\/strong>&#8216;s return to the White House. Catching allies by surprise, the U.S. president has talked to\u00a0his counterparts <strong>Vladimir Putin<\/strong> and <strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>, both of whom would be <strong>willing to start peace talks<\/strong> as soon as possible. By taking the fate of the three-year war directly into its\u00a0own hands, Washington is making it clear to the Europeans that from now on <strong>they will have to take greater responsibility<\/strong> for the security of the Old Continent. Putin himself <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/putin-invited-trump-moscow-discuss-ukraine-kremlin-says-2025-02-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">has invited<\/a> his U.S. counterpart to <strong>go<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>to Moscow to negotiate<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<h3 id='the-call-with-zelensky'  id=\"boomdevs_2\" class=\"p1\">The call with Zelensky<\/h3>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Right afterwards, Trump also called Ukrainian President\u00a0<strong>Volodymyr Zelensky<\/strong>\u00a0to inform him of his conversation with the authoritarian leader of the country attacking Kyiv.\u00a0<span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">I think President Putin wants peace, President Zelensky wants peace, and I want peace,&#8221;\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/trump-says-he-discussed-ending-ukraine-war-with-russias-putin-2025-02-12\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">he\u00a0<span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">told <\/span><\/a><span style=\"color: var(--body-color);\">reporters in the Oval Office.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The leader of the former Soviet republic declared that &#8220;<strong>no one wants peace more than Ukraine<\/strong>,&#8221; adding that &#8220;together with the United States, <strong>we will define the next steps <\/strong>to end Russian aggression and\u00a0<strong>ensure a lasting and reliable peace<\/strong>.&#8221; Trying to put on a good face, Zelensky expressed confidence that &#8220;America&#8217;s strength is sufficient to <strong>put pressure on Russia and Putin<\/strong> to achieve peace.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For Kyiv, the change of administration in Washington was impactful.<strong> The Ukrainians were not consulted<\/strong> by Trump&#8217;s team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.economist.com\/europe\/2025\/02\/12\/donald-trump-starts-immediate-talks-with-vladimir-putin-on-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">before the call<\/a> to Putin. Washington&#8217;s negotiating team will include CIA Director <strong>John Ratcliffe<\/strong>, National Security Advisor <strong>Michael Waltz<\/strong> and Special Envoy for the Middle East <strong>Steve Witkoff<\/strong> (while <strong>Keith Kellogg<\/strong>, who is also Special Envoy for Ukraine and Russia, has been left out).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">This <strong>new course of star-studded diplomacy<\/strong> follows a <strong>prisoner exchange between Moscow and Washington<\/strong> the previous day, seen by the Kremlin as a <strong>demonstration of good faith<\/strong> between the two countries. In this regard, U.S. Secretary of Defense <strong>Pete Hegseth<\/strong>\u2014visiting NATO headquarters in Brussels for a two-day <strong>Contact Group for Ukraine<\/strong> (whose leadership has just switched from Washington to London) between yesterday and today\u2014was<a href=\"https:\/\/www.euronews.com\/my-europe\/2025\/02\/12\/ukraines-return-to-pre-2014-borders-and-nato-membership-are-unrealistic-hegseth-tells-alli\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> particularly clear<\/a> on at least three issues.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">First,\u00a0<strong>Ukraine must give up on regaining all the land that has fallen into Moscow&#8217;s hands<\/strong>\u00a0(a corridor from the Donbas to Kherson, extending\u00a0<strong>about one-fifth of its territory<\/strong>) and the hope of\u00a0<strong>returning to the pre-2014 borders<\/strong>, which Hegseth called an &#8220;<strong>unrealistic goal<\/strong>. &#8220;Pursuing this illusory goal will only prolong the war and cause further suffering,&#8221; Hegseth said flatly.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Second,\u00a0<strong>&#8220;the United States will not support Kiev&#8217;s accession&#8221; to the Atlantic Alliance<\/strong>\u00a0&#8220;as part of a peace negotiation.&#8221; Third, whatever form they take, the infamous\u00a0<strong>security guarantees<\/strong>\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/10\/16\/here-is-the-plan-for-victory-that-zelensky-will-present-to-eu-leaders-summit\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">long requested by Zelensky<\/a>\u00a0<strong>will not involve the U.S. military<\/strong>, and any\u00a0peacekeeping\u00a0mission will have to take place\u00a0<strong>outside the NATO umbrella<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">For his part, the Ukrainian president is trying to <strong>ensure Trump&#8217;s continued involvement<\/strong> by offering him <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/11\/stefanchuk-in-eu-parliament-eu-renews-support-for-ukraine-toward-just-peace\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a sort\u00a0of preemption<\/a> regarding <strong>access to Ukraine&#8217;s generous mineral resources<\/strong>. Still, they\u00a0<strong>remained unimplemented<\/strong> and did not serve to prevent the large-scale invasion of 2022.<\/p>\n<h3 id='and-europe'  id=\"boomdevs_5\" class=\"p1\">And Europe?<\/h3>\n<p>The European allies of Kyiv <strong>seem to be mainly interested<\/strong> in the <strong>stability of any diplomatic solution<\/strong>, as emphasised by the Secretary General of NATO, <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>, who cited the Minsk protocols as an example of a non-lasting peace.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the events of the last few hours have made the Twenty-Seven realize that the tune in Washington has irrevocably changed. <strong>No more preemptive consultations between the two sides of the Atlantic<\/strong>, but rather a <strong>fait accompli<\/strong><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><strong>\u00a0<\/strong><\/span>approach and a muscular, transactional posture to international relations. And they try to be vocal. But it is an almost muted voice.
