The EU statistical agency reported that <strong>75,045<\/strong> <strong>citizens of third countries<\/strong>\u00a0applied for international protection in one of the member states in November of 2024, <strong>down\u00a014 percent than in<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>October 2024<\/strong>\u00a0(86,920), and an annual\u00a0<strong>31 percent contraction<\/strong> (108,895 in\u00a0November 2023).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">By <strong>nationality<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Syrians<\/strong> were the largest group<strong>\u00a0<\/strong>\u00a0(11,565 applications, 15.4 percent of the total), followed by <strong>Venezuelans<\/strong> (7,210 applications, or 9.6 percent) and <strong>Afghans<\/strong> (5,880 or 7.8 percent).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <strong>countries that received the most applicants<\/strong> were <strong>Germany<\/strong> (16,820), <strong>Spain<\/strong> (14,925), <strong>Italy,<\/strong> and <strong>France<\/strong> (11,620 and 11,345, respectively), which together accounted for about\u00a0<strong>73 percent of all asylum applications<\/strong> filed last November.<\/p>\n<div class=\"flourish-embed flourish-chart\" data-src=\"visualisation\/21672226\"><script src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/resources\/embed.js\"><\/script><noscript><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/public.flourish.studio\/visualisation\/21672226\/thumbnail\" width=\"100%\" alt=\"chart visualization\" \/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p class=\"p1\">Considering the aggregate population of the 27 member states, an average of <strong>16.7 applications for international protection were filed for every 100,000 EU citizens<\/strong> in the month under review. The figure varies significantly across member states: the <strong>highest ratio<\/strong> of asylum seekers to population was recorded in <strong>Greece<\/strong> (79.5 applications per 100 thousand inhabitants), <strong>Cyprus<\/strong> (42.4 applications),\u00a0<strong>Luxembourg<\/strong> and <strong>Spain<\/strong> (both with 30.7 applications). In <strong>Italy,<\/strong> this figure stands at <strong>19.7 applications per 100 thousand inhabitants<\/strong>, not precisely what one would expect upon hearing talk of &#8220;invasion&#8221; or &#8220;ethnic replacement.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Of the 75,045 asylum seekers, <strong>2,820 were unaccompanied minors<\/strong> (3.76 percent of the total), of whom 875 applied in <strong>Germany<\/strong> (31 percent of the total number of unaccompanied minors), 525 in <strong>Greece<\/strong> (18.62 percent), and 320 in <strong>Spain<\/strong> (11.35 percent).
