{"id":419038,"date":"2025-02-18T14:14:36","date_gmt":"2025-02-18T13:14:36","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/02\/18\/ppe-serve-ue-piu-sicura-di-se-mentalita\/"},"modified":"2025-02-18T15:29:09","modified_gmt":"2025-02-18T14:29:09","slug":"epp-pushes-for-change-need-a-more-confident-eu-a-shift-in-mindset","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/18\/epp-pushes-for-change-need-a-more-confident-eu-a-shift-in-mindset\/","title":{"rendered":"EPP pushes for change: &#8216;Need a more confident EU, a shift in mindset&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; No self-pity is allowed, as it is counterproductive to give in to hysteria. <strong>We need &#8220;<\/strong><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>a confident and assertive Europe.&#8221; The European People&#8217;s Party<\/strong> (EPP) is trying\u00a0to shake up a European Union that has taken a back seat in the mediation process\u00a0to bring about peace in Ukraine and that has seen the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/13\/trump-talks-to-putin-and-zelensky-while-europe-stands-idly-by\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presidents of Russia and the United States, Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, not involving the old continent from the outset<\/a>. &#8220;This moment requires a new urgency mindset,&#8221; the EPP said, implying thinking differently than in the past.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EPP assessed the situation after the Paris Summit in an extraordinary video conference meeting. It wants to stand firm and demonstrate\u00a0capacity at a time that represents a test for the present and even more so for the future of the EU. That is why the European center-right family sets an agenda to make the EU an active and proactive player to avoid standing idly by.<\/p>\n<p>Among the points\u00a0in the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.epp.eu\/papers\/epp-informal-summit-statement-18-february-2025\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">informal summit statement<\/a>, the EPP calls on member states to <span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><strong>establish\u00a0a self-standing defense council and a standing defense committee<\/strong>\u00a0as\u00a0&#8220;now, above all else, undivided focus is needed on reaching speedy and effective decisions.&#8221; With the help of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polish-presidency.consilium.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Polish presidency<\/a> led by Donald Tusk&#8217;s government, a popular, &#8220;these immediate priorities can be achieved fast.&#8221;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"kul5Q1JXLU\"><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/02\/18\/von-der-leyen-ucraina-costa-usa\/\">Von der Leyen e Costa all&#8217;inviato Usa per l&#8217;Ucraina: &#8220;Lavoriamo fianco a fianco&#8221;<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"&#8220;Von der Leyen e Costa all&#8217;inviato Usa per l&#8217;Ucraina: &#8220;Lavoriamo fianco a fianco&#8221;&#8221; &#8212; Eunews\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/02\/18\/von-der-leyen-ucraina-costa-usa\/embed\/#?secret=HpaTXoNZ2X#?secret=kul5Q1JXLU\" data-secret=\"kul5Q1JXLU\" width=\"500\" height=\"282\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">In the new political activism, there is also the need\u00a0for <strong>extraordinary EU and NATO summits<\/strong>, including\u00a0meetings to take decisive steps to strengthen the EU&#8217;s strategic autonomy and defense capabilities and build a European pillar in NATO that can operate autonomously.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>In the immediate future, however, it is necessary to have a decisive role in deciding the near-term arrangements. The EPP insists on Europe being present in the peace process since &#8220;Ukrainian interests are European interests.&#8221;<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"> Whatever we start discussing, the principle must be firm that &#8220;<strong>The negotiations cannot lead to limiting the sovereign right of a country to choose their own security arrangements, including joining EU or NATO, <\/strong>nor can they lead to a renegotiation of the security architecture of Europe<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">,&#8221; the EPP said.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">Furthermore, Europe must also sit at the table from the outset, not later. &#8220;Any post-war order can only be concluded with and not against the will of the EU and its member states, as <strong>only Europe can secure a long-term peace order and create an economic future for Ukraine<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The threat Russia poses to Europe is &#8220;long-term&#8221; and, in any case, permanent even after the war ends.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>The EPP,\u00a0essentially, reaffirms the<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/04\/von-der-leyen-to-eu-ambassadors-we-have-our-own-role-lets-build-european-foreign-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0call\u00a0of\u00a0European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen to build a new European foreign policy<\/a>,\u00a0without victimhood or passivity, but with a whole new resolve:\u00a0geopolitical and political.
