In some respects, it is an obligatory choice. However, it risks\u00a0throwing the old continent into a counterproductive dimension.\u00a0Like China, India has\u00a0a role as a privileged partner with Russia, which is condemned and subject to\u00a0no less than sixteen sanctions packages and still has a lot of work to\u00a0do on\u00a0human rights. In essence, it is not exactly a champion of those values that the EU has flaunted in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>The <strong>European Parliament&#8217;s think tank<\/strong>, in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/thinktank\/en\/document\/EPRS_BRI(2025)769496\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a working paper<\/a> drafted to ease the task of MEPs, makes no secret of the fact that EU-India relations are not without critical issues. The first concerns India&#8217;s political agenda. &#8220;The EU is also looking to expand its circle of key partners,\u00a0<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">against a backdrop of uncertainty over transatlantic relations&#8221; is the document&#8217;s premise. &#8220;<strong>India meanwhile maintains a privileged relationship with Russia and is strengthening ties with the Trump administration.<\/strong>&#8221; A way of positioning itself on the international chessboard that certainly puts the EU in the uncomfortable position of having to choose between avoiding any relationship with those who do not share European principles or embrace\u00a0that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/04\/von-der-leyen-to-eu-ambassadors-we-have-our-own-role-lets-build-european-foreign-policy\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pragmatism outlined by von der Leyen, in which we have\u00a0to accept that we <strong>&#8220;have to work with countries that do not have similar ideas<\/strong> but share some of our interests.<\/a>&#8220;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_200709\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-200709 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18-1024x682.png\" alt=\"Ue India von der Leyen Modi\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18-1024x682.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18-768x512.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Schermata-2023-05-16-alle-13.05.18.png 1162w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-200709\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyne, with Indian prime minister, Narendra Modi (source: EU Commission)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h4 id='eu-india-the-calendar-for-the-new-relationship-season'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">EU-India, the calendar for the new relationship season<\/h4>\n<div class=\"lRu31\" dir=\"ltr\">\n<p><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">The European Commission is serious. Little does it matter if New Delhi flirts with Moscow and Washington. <strong>Next week<\/strong>, <strong>the entire college will be in India on\u00a0February 27 and 28<\/strong>. The <a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/commission\/presscorner\/detail\/en\/ip_23_2728\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EU-India Council on Trade and Technology<\/a> will also meet for the occasion.<\/span><\/span> <span class=\"jCAhz\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">A joint communication on a new EU-India strategic agenda is scheduled for the second quarter of 2025. <strong>An EU-India summit could take place in the last quarter of 2025<\/strong>. It is a\u00a0timetable with dates, milestones, and goals, reflecting a desire to hedge against new trade tensions and shifting\u00a0world orders.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div id=\"ow25\">The\u00a0<span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">EU wishes to develop its relations with India, whose market and economic growth represent a valuable opportunity for European companies, especially in green technologies. It is noted that\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">India is a leader in promoting renewable energy, and this role is not new. In March 2018, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and\u00a0French President Emmanuel Macron co-chaired the International Solar Alliance (ISA) founding conference.<\/span><\/span>\u00a0ISA aims<span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">\u00a0to unlock $1 trillion in solar investment by 2030,\u00a0reducing technology and financing costs.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<h4 id='the-geopolitical-game'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">The geopolitical game<\/h4>\n<div><span class=\"HwtZe\" lang=\"en\"><span class=\"jCAhz ChMk0b\"><span class=\"ryNqvb\">There is also the need to consider the geopolitical game and\u00a0not underestimate it. European Parliament researchers recall that <strong>New Delhi&#8217;s goal is to &#8220;place itself at the center of the global balance of power<\/strong>&#8221;\u00a0between the United States and its allies on the one hand and Russia and China (with which it participates in the inter-governmental BRICS organization and the Shanghai Cooperation Organization) on the other. At the same time, India aims to represent and lead the &#8216;Global South.&#8217;<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div>In this all-India agenda, Russia plays a significant role, as India historically feels threatened by China (with which there is still a dispute over the Aksai-Chin territories, claimed by both sides) and sees relations with Russia as a way to respond to this sense of Chinese encirclement.
