Brussels – In line with the European Commission’s strategy<\/a> to build <\/strong>and intensify\u00a0strategic partnerships around the world<\/strong>, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> completed her two-day visit to Bridgetown, Barbados<\/strong>, where she attended the 48th ordinary session of the <\/strong>Caribbean Community Conference\u00a0<\/strong>(CARICOM). Hosted by Barbados Prime Minister Mia Mottley, she met with the 15 leaders of Caribbean countries<\/strong>, reaffirming<\/strong> to those present the closeness of the two communities<\/strong> at opposite ends of the Atlantic and how both share firm support for Ukraine<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

The visit is in the context of recent agreements with Mercosur, Mexico, and Malaysia<\/strong>. Additional outreach visits\u00a0to\u00a0South Africa<\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0India<\/a> are planned in the future<\/strong><\/span>, while an EU<\/strong>–Central Asia<\/strong> summit will be held in April.<\/p>\n

“In this world where there is a clear attempt to build spheres of influence<\/strong>, where conflicting visions of the world order are leading to a transactional approach to global affairs<\/strong>,” the president said, alluding, without naming names, to the attitude of Washington and Moscow, “Europe wants to be a correct and trusted\u00a0<\/strong>partner<\/a> for all regions of the world that want to work with us<\/strong>.”<\/p>\n

A brief exchange between Grenada Prime Minister Dickon Mitchell and the president on the subject of European reparations for colonial slavery: “Slavery is a crime against humanity,” she replied.<\/p>\n

Climate change, artificial intelligence, trade, and the environment were among the topics discussed.\u00a0In addition, Von der Leyen has participated in launching\u00a0four<\/strong>\u00a0investment programs<\/strong>\u00a0and partnerships in the\u00a0biomedical, pharmaceutical, telecommunications, and clean energy<\/strong>\u00a0sectors and\u00a0<\/span>announced a \u20ac19.5 million\u00a0aid package to Haiti<\/strong>.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
