The European Union is determined to support Kyiv and show tangible closeness to the country Russia attacked, and membership seems one of those ways. However, there are divisions in the EU on achieving this outcome, and the issue is poised to spark debates among leaders at the two summits in March, with Ukraine at the center of discussions. At least six member states would like to speed up the enlargement negotiations; the others are holding back, with the Polish Council presidency unwilling to press the accelerator.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mfa.gov.lv\/en\/co-operation-among-baltic-and-nordic-countries?utm_source=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.google.com%2F\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nordic countries and the Baltic states<\/a>\u00a0would like to see as many negotiating chapters open as possible, preferably all of them<\/strong>,&#8221; <strong>Jessica Rosencrantz<\/strong>, Sweden&#8217;s Minister for European Affairs, sounded off at the General Affairs Council meeting dedicated to preparing for the March 20 summit of heads of state and government. <strong>Denmark, Finland, Sweden, Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania<\/strong> would like\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/28\/eu-determined-to-open-accession-negotiations-with-ukraine-by-march\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the EU to\u00a0live up to its intentions and promises to open the accession process by March<\/a>\u00a0and accelerate the process that is needed to bring\u00a0Ukraine\u00a0into the EU. <strong>Poland<\/strong> supports this proposal in principle, but the situation calls for caution<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_419684\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se.png\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-419684 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-1024x399.png\" width=\"1024\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-1024x399.png 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-300x117.png 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-768x299.png 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-750x292.png 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se-1140x444.png 1140w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/pl_se.png 1242w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-419684\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Poland&#8217;s Minister for the European Union, Adam Szlapka, and Sweden&#8217;s Minister for European Affairs, Jessica Rosencrantz [Brussels, Feb. 25, 2025]<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;We are determined to support Ukraine and advance the\u00a0enlargement path,&#8221; said\u00a0<strong>Adam Szlapka<\/strong>, Poland&#8217;s minister for the European Union, whose government holds the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/polish-presidency.consilium.europa.eu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rotating presidency<\/a>\u00a0of the EU Council. However, he adds, <strong>&#8220;there is no unanimity&#8221;<\/strong> in this regard and, therefore, &#8220;I am not going to commit\u00a0to any\u00a0dates.&#8221; A consensus still has to be built and found. It will take time, which\u00a0is difficult to quantify. The Polish presidency makes no secret that &#8220;it will be a difficult discussion&#8221; on Ukraine&#8217;s EU accession negotiations, which brings with it the issue of borders.<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Among the leaders who doubt\u00a0Ukraine&#8217;s entry into Europe is the Hungarian prime minister, Viktor Orban. The latter publicly raised the issue of borders, which are unclear due to occupied and disputed territories, making membership impractical.\u00a0The EU line does not change on this.\u00a0<strong>&#8220;The European Union recognizes Ukraine in the borders before\u00a0the 2014 war<\/strong>,&#8221; <strong>Szlapka said<\/strong>. That means Donbas and, more importantly, Crimea. A position that fits into the peace process that US President Donald Trump and the European Union itself want to work on.
