After the longest negotiations in its modern history, <b>Austria finally has a government<\/b>. It took the centrist parties five months to find the\u00a0solution\u00a0and put together <b>a coalition that would exclude the post-Nazi far right<\/b>, which came first in last September&#8217;s elections. The new executive&#8217;s program includes, among other things, <strong>fiscal consolidation<\/strong> and <strong>tightening on immigration<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">After intense negotiations, the main centrist parties\u2014the <b>Populars of the \u00d6VP<\/b>, the <b>Social Democrats of the SP\u00d6<\/b> and the <b>liberals of Neos\u2014<\/b>have agreed to form the transalpine republic&#8217;s first three-way coalition since the post-World War II era. An executive that stemmed mainly from the need to <b>restore the cordon sanitaire<\/b>\u00a0around the <b>Freedom Party (FP\u00d6)<\/b> of <b>Herbert Kickl<\/b>, keeping him out of the control rooms.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The far-right formation, born in the 1950s <b>from the ashes of Nazism<\/b> (former members of the SS were the founders), is characterized by an e<b>uroskeptic, pro-Russian and anti-immigrant rhetoric<\/b>. In Strasbourg it is allied with the Lega, Fidesz and the Rassemblement national in the <b>Patriots for Europe (PfE)<\/b> group.\u00a0<span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">Surprisingly, the FP\u00d6\u00a0<\/span><a style=\"text-align: inherit; font-family: var(--body-font-family);\" href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/30\/austria-veers-to-the-right-fpo-is-the-first-party-opens-government-puzzle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had come out first<\/a><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0in last September&#8217;s elections with\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">almost 29 per cent support,<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">\u00a0an unprecedented result since the end of World War II.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_391768\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-391768 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Herbert Kickl\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-1536x1024.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-2048x1365.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/09\/000_36FN742-1140x760.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-391768\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FP\u00d6 leader Herbert Kickl during an election rally (photo: Alex Halada\/Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/europe\/key-policies-austrias-new-coalition-government-agreement-2025-02-27\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">During a joint press conference <\/a>this morning (Feb. 27), the leaders of the three prospective executive partners\u2014the popular\u00a0<strong>Christian Stocker<\/strong>, the social democrat\u00a0<strong>Andreas Babler,<\/strong>\u00a0and the liberal\u00a0<strong>Beate Meinl-Reisinger<\/strong>\u2014listed th<strong>e main points of their government contract.<\/strong>\u00a0However, the Neos base has yet to formally approve it (a vote, which must pass with a qualified two-thirds majority of the membership, is scheduled for March 2).<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Stocker praised <b>the culture of consensus and compromise<\/b> that has characterized Austria&#8217;s post-World War II trajectory, calling it &#8220;the key to making bold decisions for the future&#8221; and hoping that this new form of three-way collaboration will bring &#8220;new ideas, new solutions, and new cooperation.&#8221; If nothing unexpected happens, the new government is expected to take office on Monday (March 3).<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The shared program includes measures to <b>reduce Vienna&#8217;s budget deficit<\/b> and bring it back within the 3 per cent limit to avoid an infringement procedure from Brussels. There is also talk of <b>increasing taxes on banks<\/b> and extending <b>taxes on extra-profits of fossil fuel producers<\/b>, but also eliminating the VAT exemption on solar panels. A cut in public spending should also come from <b>reforming the pension system<\/b>. As for the management of migration flows (a hot topic on which the far right capitalised during the election campaign), \u00d6VP, SP\u00d6 and Neos have promised a <b>tightening of family reunification policies<\/b> for refugees.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"de\">In times of great challenge, Austria has always gained its strength from the consensus of balancing forces. It was precisely this consensus that characterized the coalition of the People&#8217;s Party and the Social Democrats. It took five months for the Nationalrat (the lower house of the legislature) to put together a coalition. In the aftermath of the vote, the three centrist parties had sat down at the negotiating table to <strong>exclude the FP\u00d6 from the government area<\/strong>.\u00a0However<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/03\/negotiations-to-give-austria-a-government-are-stalled\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the negotiations had foundered<\/a>\u00a0in early January\u00a0<\/span>when <strong>the Liberals\u00a0<\/strong><b><\/b>pulled out, scuppering the deal.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">At that point, President of the Republic <b>Alexander Van der Bellen<\/b> had instructed Kickl\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/07\/austria-herbert-kickls-far-right-could-lead-the-next-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">test the waters<\/a>\u00a0and try to\u00a0<strong>assemble<\/strong><\/span><b>\u00a0<\/b>a majority with the \u00d6VP. But, quoting <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/02\/12\/austria-kickl-stop-negoziati-fpo-ovp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the thirst for personal power<\/a> from the FP\u00d6 leader, by February <strong>the Populars had pulled the plug<\/strong> on dialogue with the radical right (with whom they had also previously governed, in 2000 and 2017).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Kickl branded the three-party alliance as a &#8220;<b>coalition of losers<\/b>,&#8221; calling for new elections.\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/politpro.eu\/en\/austria\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">According to polls<\/a>, today the <strong>Fp\u00f6 would take 34 per cent<\/strong>. Criticism has also come from Leghist allies, who denounce yet another ploy: &#8220;The left defeated at the polls maintains power with palace agreements,&#8221; the European delegation of the Lega\u00a0complains in a note, where they do not even spare\u00a0 jabs at the Populars who &#8220;perform the miracle of resurrecting the losing Socialists.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>White smoke in Vienna: Populars, Social Democrats and Liberals have closed the deal to keep Herbert Kickl&#8217;s FP\u00d6 out of executive power.
