Brussels – The Brussels Association of Foreign Correspondents (API-IPA) is in full solidarity with the White House Correspondents’ Association (WHCA) “in the face of actions that threaten the independence of a free press in the United States<\/strong>. Sidelining\u00a0the WHCA from decisions regarding access to the White House press pool is troubling and sets a dangerous precedent.”<\/p>\n

As an organization representing the professional interests of journalists accredited to EU and NATO institutions, API-IPA, a note explained, remains convinced that a free and independent press is the cornerstone of democracy. “The ability of correspondents to report without government interference on those in power is fundamental. No leader should be able to pick and choose who is allowed to report,” said Association President Dafydd ab Iago.<\/strong><\/p>\n

“We note that the WHCA has worked tirelessly for more than a century to uphold professional standards, expand access to the press, and ensure that journalists\u2014reporters, photographers, producers and technicians\u2014have the freedom to carry out\u00a0their vital work without undue influence,” ab lago adds.<\/p>\n

The association therefore “strongly supports WHCA’s ongoing\u00a0commitment to comprehensive\u00a0access<\/strong>, full transparency and the right of the U.S. and world\u00a0public to receive independent and fearless information. We join fellow correspondents in Washington in defending these principles, which are essential to holding power to account.”<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
