After last Thursday&#8217;s political agreement, yesterday came the green light from Neos&#8217;\u00a0members, the junior liberal partner in the <strong>first three-way coalition in Austria&#8217;s modern history<\/strong>. Economy and irregular immigration are among the tests awaiting the new chancellor <strong>Christian Stocker<\/strong>, leader of the Christian Democrats.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Two records for Austria&#8217;s new executive, which formally took office late today (March 3). It is the first with three parties in it: the <strong>People&#8217;s Party (\u00d6V)<\/strong>, the <strong>Social Democratic Party (SP\u00d6)<\/strong> and <strong>Neos<\/strong> (liberals), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/27\/austria-has-a-new-government-which-excludes-the-far-right\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which have\u00a0reached<\/a> an agreement on the program last Thursday (Feb. 27), and it is the one that\u00a0required for its formation <strong>the longest negotiations in Republican history<\/strong>: a full five months since last September&#8217;s elections.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The final green light came yesterday, when <strong>Neos members voted<\/strong> on the party&#8217;s participation in the coalition.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">During a hybrid session, some 94 percent of members\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.dw.com\/en\/austrias-3-way-coalition-gets-final-vote-of-approval\/a-71799945\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">have approved<\/a>\u00a0the policy document that is to guide the executive&#8217;s actions.<\/span>\u00a0This is the first time the liberal formation, founded in 2012, has come to government.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The new federal chancellor is <strong>Christian Stocker<\/strong>, the 64-year-old leader of the \u00d6VP. &#8220;I aspire to be a chancellor for everyone,&#8221; he said during the inauguration ceremony in Vienna. The president of the Republic, <strong>Alexander Van der Bellen<\/strong>, noted that &#8220;good things come to those who wait,&#8221; saying he felt &#8220;positive and optimistic&#8221; about the country&#8217;s future.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-o-mail-quote-node=\"1\" data-o-mail-quote=\"1\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"de\">I am honored and delighted to assume responsibility as Federal Chancellor of this Republic. The people of Austria can rest assured that this country will come first in every decision I make. The <strong>vice-chancellor<\/strong> is the head of the Social Democrats, <strong>Andreas Babler<\/strong>, who will handle the Arts and Culture portfolio, while Neos leader <strong>Beate Meinl-Reisinger<\/strong> got Foreign Affairs.\u00a0<strong>Gerhard Karner<\/strong> (Popular) remains in the Interior Ministry<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">, and\u00a0<strong>Klaudia Tanner<\/strong>\u00a0(Popular) is<\/span> the Defence Ministry. In addition, the \u00d6VP has taken over the Ministries of Economy (<strong>Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer<\/strong>) and Agriculture (Norbert Totschnig), among others.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The SP\u00d6 gained the Climate and Social Affairs ministries (for <strong>Peter Hanke<\/strong> and <strong>Corinna Schumann<\/strong> respectively), while Finance and Justice are in the hands of two independents from the Social Democratic area, <strong>Markus Marterbauer<\/strong> and <strong>Anna Sporrer<\/strong>. To Neos went, in addition to Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Education with <strong>Christoph Wiederkehr<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The main challenges for Stocker and his allies will now be to reduce unemployment, <strong>block the recession<\/strong> and <strong>secure the public accounts<\/strong> (an infringement procedure from Brussels looms over Vienna). The coalition agreement calls for <strong>cuts in public spending<\/strong> for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.removepaywall.com\/search?url=https:\/\/www.bloomberg.com\/news\/articles\/2025-03-03\/austria-installs-new-cabinet-in-shadow-of-recession-far-right\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">over \u20ac6 billion<\/a>\u00a0and a\u00a0<strong> tax<\/strong>\u00a0<strong>increase on big business<\/strong>, as well as a <strong>restriction on irregular immigration<\/strong> (e.g., on the issue of family reunification of asylum seekers). Meinl-Reisinger predicted &#8220;<strong>five years of tough negotiations<\/strong>&#8221; between the majority partners. Together, the three parties hold 110 of the total 183 seats in the Nationalrat, the lower house of the Austrian legislature.<\/p>\n<p>In the last elections, the <strong>post-Nazi far right FP\u00d6<\/strong>, led by <strong>Herbert Kickl<\/strong>,\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/09\/30\/austria-veers-to-the-right-fpo-is-the-first-party-opens-government-puzzle\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">came out on top<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>To avert his entry into the government area, the main centrist parties decided in late February to gloss over their differences (which had led to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/07\/austria-herbert-kickls-far-right-could-lead-the-next-government\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"_blank noopener\">a first failure of negotiations<\/a> in early January) and <strong>restrict the cordon sanitaire<\/strong>, after <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/02\/12\/austria-negotiations-to-form-a-government-fail-kickl-resigns\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an inconclusive attempt<\/a>\u00a0by Kickl to form a coalition with the Populars.
