{"id":420691,"date":"2025-03-07T15:39:51","date_gmt":"2025-03-07T14:39:51","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2025\/03\/07\/8-marzo-diritti-donne-ue-lahbib\/"},"modified":"2025-03-07T17:14:06","modified_gmt":"2025-03-07T16:14:06","slug":"march-8-eu-roadmap-for-womens-rights","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/07\/march-8-eu-roadmap-for-womens-rights\/","title":{"rendered":"On the eve of March 8, Brussels unveils new roadmap for women&#8217;s rights"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Brussels &#8211; In the face of a disturbing trend\u2014in the EU and the rest of the world\u2014to call into question some of the achievements of the struggle for women&#8217;s rights,\u00a0<strong>the European Commission reaffirms its commitment to &#8220;fully realising an equal society in Europe.&#8221;<\/strong> On the eve of March 8, the International Women&#8217;s Rights Day, the EU Executive&#8217;s Head of Equality, <strong>Hadja Lahbib<\/strong>, unveiled a new Roadmap to promote the gender equality agenda.<\/p>\n<p>According to numbers available at the European level, even in 2025 &#8220;one in three women in the EU will experience physical or sexual violence,&#8221; Lahbib recalled. But the problem is even broader than that: in different parts of the world, and to some degree in some member countries as well, we are witnessing &#8220;a <strong>downsizing\u00a0of sexual and reproductive rights<\/strong> and an attack on diversity and inclusion policies,&#8221; the EU commissioner admitted.This contrasts the progress made in the last five years at the EU level<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">\u00a0through the implementation of the 2020-2025 gender equality strategy: new\u00a0<strong>rules on pay transparency, work-life balance<\/strong>\u00a0for equal caring responsibilities, and\u00a0<\/span>gender balance on company boards,\u00a0and against\u00a0the most odious phenomenon of all, violence on\u00a0women, against which the EU has committed itself by ratifying the Istanbul<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">\u00a0<\/span>convention and adopting the first-ever directive on <a href=\"https:\/\/eur-lex.europa.eu\/eli\/dir\/2024\/1385\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fighting violence against women<\/a>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_420685\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-420685\" style=\"width: 476px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-420685 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Hadja Lahbib\" width=\"476\" height=\"345\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-300x218.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-1024x743.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-768x557.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-1536x1115.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-2048x1486.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-120x86.jpg 120w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-750x544.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/P065141-166657-1140x827.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 476px) 100vw, 476px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-420685\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Hadja Lahbib, European Union (EU) Commissioner for Equality, Preparedness and Crisis Management<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">In the policy guidelines of her second term, the President of the European Commission,\u00a0<\/span><strong style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family);\">Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong><span style=\"text-align: inherit; color: var(--body-color); font-family: var(--body-font-family); font-weight: var(--body-font-weight);\">,\u00a0<\/span>pledged to draft a new strategy for gender equality. Von der Leyen herself wanted to give a strong signal already in the composition of her college of commissioners, asking member countries to propose two candidates, one man and one woman, so that she could ensure a gender balance in the EU executive. The capitals did not listen to her, and indeed <strong>a college composed of 16 men and 11 women<\/strong> is not exactly the best calling card.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">But, staying in the political sphere, it is still slightly more than the average female presence in member state parliaments, which according to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/ec.europa.eu\/eurostat\/web\/products-eurostat-news\/w\/edn-20250307-1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Eurostat<\/a>\u00a0occupy exactly one-third of the total number of seats.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<strong>Societies in which women and men are treated equally are better<\/strong>, fairer, and more effective. So let&#8217;s tap into the vast reservoir of talent and skills of everyone, men and women,&#8221; the EU leader said as she hailed the new roadmap,\u00a0which will need to accelerate the reduction of employment and wage gaps between men and women, combat discriminatory norms and stereotypes, and solve the equation whereby women are still overrepresented in lower-paid positions and underrepresented in decision-making roles.\u00a0The ambitious goals outlined by Lahbib will feed into the strategy for the next five years. From the absence of gender-based violence, to be achieved through prevention and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2024\/02\/05\/rape-based-on-consent-eu-agreement\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">legislation<\/a> that\u00a0<strong>finally defines rape based on lack of consent<\/strong>, to achieving the &#8220;highest standards of health,&#8221; which means ensuring <strong>women&#8217;s access to sexual and reproductive health and rights<\/strong>, as well as promoting gender-sensitive medical research, clinical trials, diagnoses, and treatments.<\/p>\n<p>The Belgian liberal highlighted the need to\u00a0<strong>promote financial literacy among women and girls<\/strong>, as a means of economic empowerment, and the equitable sharing of care responsibilities between women and men. The EU will seek to &#8220;encourage&#8221; girls and women to pursue careers in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) while promoting <strong>engagement of boys and men in education, health, and welfare<\/strong>.\u00a0<span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">Indeed,<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/2022\/11\/08\/gender-gap-scientifico-ue-genere\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0<\/a>the gender gap\u00a0in science graduates is present throughout Europe: women make up about 39 per cent of STEM graduates in Italy, but only 26 per cent in Germany.<\/span>\u00a0According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/eige.europa.eu\/it\/in-brief\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">European Institute for Gender Equality<\/a>, the EU could increase GDP per capita by up to 3 per cent by closing the gap in STEM jobs.\u00a0The roadmap then includes addressing the representation gap at all levels of public and political life, and ensuring institutional mechanisms that guarantee women&#8217;s rights and <strong>sustainable funding for gender equality policies and women&#8217;s rights organizations<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>Tomorrow, hundreds of thousands of women and men across Europe will take to the streets as they do every year to march\u00a0for gender equality.
