In the aftermath of the extraordinary European Council on Ukraine and defense, the leaders of the European institutions, <strong>Antonio Costa, Ursula von der Leyen<\/strong> and the High Representative for Foreign Affairs, <strong>Kaja Kallas<\/strong>,<strong> met with the leaders of the United Kingdom, Turkey, Canada, Norway and Iceland<\/strong> to take stock of the situation. And the five non-EU countries supported\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/06\/leaders-back-von-der-leyens-defense-plan-meloni-italy-will-not-divert-cohesion-funds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the results<\/a> of the summit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Von der Leyen and I briefed&#8221; the British prime ministers, Keir Starmer, Norwegian, Jonas Gahr Store, Icelandic, Kristr\u00fan Frostad\u00f3ttir, Canadian, Justin Trudeau, and the Turkish president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, &#8220;on the important decisions taken by the European Council last night and on our meeting with Zelensky,&#8221; European Council President Costa explained. Costa reportedly outlined the European Council&#8217;s conclusions on Ukraine, while von der Leyen\u2014godmother of the Rearm Europe plan\u2014focused more on defence. <strong>Starmer, Erdogan, Trudeau, and others reportedly &#8220;welcomed this initiative<\/strong>, stressing the importance of close coordination among partners,&#8221; congratulating the EU &#8220;on the key decisions taken.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">In addition, they &#8220;expressed their <strong>determination to contribute to joint efforts<\/strong> to support Ukraine and to intensify defence cooperation&#8221; and &#8220;stressed the importance of NATO and the need for close complementarity of all work.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">Von der Leyen also separately updated the secretary general of the Atlantic Alliance, <strong>Mark Rutte<\/strong>.\u00a0<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"><span style=\"margin: 0px; padding: 0px;\">In\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vonderleyen\/status\/1898005658357625137\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a post<\/a>\u00a0on X, the leader reiterated that &#8220;the Rearm Europe plan will enhance key capability areas, from air and missile defense to cyber warfare, in line with NATO priorities.<\/span>\u00a0This will strengthen both Europe&#8217;s defence and the transatlantic partnership.&#8221;<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the aftermath of the extraordinary European Council meeting on defense and Ukraine, EU leaders took stock of the situation with the leaders of the five allied countries.
