In the aftermath of the agreement reached between Kyiv and Washington on the terms of a <strong>potential cease-fire<\/strong>, from Strasbourg comes yet another firm stance by MEPs,\u00a0which, net of the (predictable) <strong>defection<\/strong> of the Italians, repeat the need to achieve a &#8220;<strong>just and lasting peace<\/strong>&#8221; to the ongoing conflict.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/press-room\/20250310IPR27232\/the-eu-must-contribute-to-robust-security-guarantees-for-ukraine\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">non-binding resolution<\/a> approved today (March 12) by the EU Parliament plenary in Strasbourg, reiterates that <strong>the EU must continue to stand by the former Soviet republic<\/strong>, which has been engaged for three years in resisting the Russian invasion. Brussels is called upon to <strong>provide Ukraine with solid security guarantees<\/strong> and, together with member states, must &#8220;<strong>significantly increase necessary assistance<\/strong>&#8221; to Kyiv.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">The deputies stress that the Ukrainian leadership should not be pushed into accepting a &#8220;surrender&#8221; and that the Twenty-Seven must take part in defining the <strong>new continental security architecture<\/strong>, while supporting the creation of a &#8220;<strong>coalition of the willing<\/strong>&#8221; under the Franco-British umbrella to send an interposition force to Ukraine.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">And\u00a0did not spare any <strong>barbs for Donald Trump&#8217;s White House<\/strong>, criticising Washington for its overly lenient approach to Moscow\u2014against which MPs are demanding\u00a0<strong>stricter sanctions as well as the confiscation of frozen assets<\/strong> to repay Ukrainian reconstruction\u2014and for &#8220;pressure&#8221; on European and Ukrainian allies.\u00a0Finally, the chamber asked for Kyiv&#8217;s <strong>accession process <\/strong>to the twelve-star club<strong> to be accelerated<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_421101\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\" style=\"width: 1024px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-421101 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"Nicola Procaccini\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029-1024x683.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/1741781963838_20250312_EP-181626B_STP_EG_029-1536x1024.jpg 1536w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-421101\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The co-chair of the ECR group, Nicola Procaccini (photo: Philippe Stirnweiss\/European Parliament)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p class=\"p1\">Melonian <strong>Nicola Procaccini<\/strong>, co-chair of the Conservatives (ECR), had tried to <strong>delay the vote<\/strong> arguing that a strong stance by the chamber\u00a0would risk undermining the delicate ongoing discussion between the United States and Russia on the <strong>conditions of the ceasefire<\/strong> that were <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/03\/11\/in-saudi-arabia-ukraine-and-u-s-seek-understanding-on-ceasefire\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">agreed yesterday<\/a> in Jeddah\u2014on which the Kremlin has yet to officially comment\u2014casting a negative light on the efforts of the star-studded administration.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">But the parliament\u00a0rejected his request, and thus the joint resolution submitted by EPP, S&amp;D, ECR, Renew and Greens (which followed a debate last February) passed <strong>with 442 votes in favor, 98 against and 126 abstentions<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">Among the Italians, the <strong>fractures were mainly in the PD<\/strong> (<strong>Nicola Zingaretti<\/strong>&#8216;s head of delegation voted in dissent, <strong>Cecilia Strada<\/strong> and <strong>Marco Tarquinio<\/strong> abstained, and the remaining 18 supported the text), while <strong>FI gave a convincing &#8220;yes&#8221; vote<\/strong>, <strong>FdI abstained<\/strong> (apart from <strong>Sergio Berlato<\/strong>, who voted against) and, finally, <strong>Lega, M5s, and AVS compactly voted against<\/strong> the resolution (of the four Greens, only <strong>Ignazio Marino<\/strong> voted in favour, whereas for Sinistra italiana only <strong>Mimmo Lucano<\/strong> voted &#8220;no&#8221;).<\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\">An update to the text to include a reference to yesterday&#8217;s talks was, however, approved by MPs, with an oral amendment (tabled by popular German <strong>Michael Gahler<\/strong>) stating that the Parliament &#8220;<strong>welcomes the joint statement by Ukraine and the United States<\/strong> following their meeting&#8221; in Saudi Arabia and &#8220;recalls that a ceasefire can be an effective instrument of cessation of hostilities <strong>only if the aggressor fully adheres to it<\/strong>,&#8221; therefore hoping &#8220;that Russia will accept and follow it by ceasing all attacks on Ukrainian civilians, infrastructure, and territory.&#8221;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In a non-binding resolution, MEPs reiterated their closeness to the former Soviet republic, which has been resisting Moscow&#8217;s aggression for more than three years.
