Brussels – “The<\/strong>\u00a0German economy is treading water.<\/strong>”\u00a0Timo Wollmersh\u00e4user, head of economic forecasting at Ifo,\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span>the Munich-based Economic Research Institute<\/a>, gives no reassurances about the difficulties of the eurozone’s leading\u00a0economy. The numbers indicate “minimal growth” in the gross domestic product (GDP) of 0.2 percent for the current year,<\/strong> which is 0.2 percentage points less than in the winter forecasts. After zero growth in 2024<\/a>,\u00a02025 will see ‘zero and something’ growth.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The Ifo head of forecasts explains that “despite a recovery in purchasing power, consumer sentiment remains subdued, and companies are also reluctant to invest.<\/strong>” In particular, the Munich-based institute notes that\u00a0industry is suffering<\/strong> from weak demand and increasing international competitive pressure.<\/span><\/span> At the same time, political uncertainties in both Germany and the United States are creating considerable risks.<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

So the policies of Donald Trump’s new administration, which\u00a0the Munich-based institute sees as “erratic and protectionist,” are\u00a0problematic for the EU. “<\/span><\/span>Reliable economic policy is vital to creating confidence and stimulating investment,” Wollmersh\u00e4user continued.<\/span><\/span> “Companies need planning certainty,” he emphasizes about\u00a0tariff risks.\u00a0<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n

The already announced import tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada, and China and retaliatory tariffs are initially negatively impacting\u00a0the US and global economies.<\/span><\/span> “If tariffs on European products are additionally increased, this could hit German export business hard<\/strong>,”\u00a0Ifo warns,\u00a0concerned about domestic politics.
