Since the tragic\u00a0canopy collapse of the Novi Sad station\u00a0in November, student-led anti-corruption protests have been growing by the day. Over the past four months, in hopes of appeasing the protesters&#8217; anger, President Aleksandar Vu\u010di\u0107 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/en\/2025\/01\/28\/student-protests-in-serbia-lead-to-resignation-of-prime-minister-vucevic\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">forced the resignation<\/a>\u00a0of the Mayor of Novi Sad, the Minister of Transportation, and Prime Minister Vu\u010devi\u0107. But the students&#8217; real goal is the end of his regime.<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of Saturday&#8217;s demonstration, the authoritarian Serbian president had shown a firm stance: &#8220;I will not allow the streets to decide the rules,&#8221; he declared. He\u00a0s<strong>uspended public transportation to the capital<\/strong> &#8220;for security reasons,&#8221; prevented Slovenian and Croatian journalists from entering the country &#8220;to preserve their safety,&#8221; and unleashed\u00a0<strong>the most extremist factions of his Serbian Progressive Party (SNS)<\/strong> affiliates, who in recent months have been involved in\u00a0several acts of violence against protesters. The government has reportedly even given the go-ahead for the <strong>use of a &#8216;sound cannon,&#8217;<\/strong> the LRAD (long-range acoustic device), to disperse the crowd during the 15 minutes of silence that students observe at all demonstrations in memory of the 15 victims of the Novi Sad incident.<\/p>\n<h4 id='vu\u010di\u0107-rejects-allegations-and-promises-an-investigation-in-48-hours'  id=\"boomdevs_1\">Vu\u010di\u0107 rejects allegations and promises &#8220;an investigation in 48 hours.&#8221;<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">&#8220;Just to be clear, the regime has turned on a sound cannon,&#8221; the students <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/BlokadaFon\/status\/1901005979212259668\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>, supported by videos of the alleged activation of the device,\u00a0banned in Serbia and a great many other countries because of the risks of <strong>permanent damage to the hearing and health of those affected<\/strong>. The opposition parties\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vreme.com\/en\/vesti\/opozicija-optuzuje-vucica-i-bezbednosne-strukture-za-upotrebu-zvucnog-topa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">reiterated the same claims<\/a>: Freedom and Justice (SSP) stressed that &#8220;never in its history has Serbia been ruled by such an evil and unscrupulous man, ready to use prohibited weapons against his people,&#8221; while the Democratic Party (DS) called on all citizens involved to\u00a0<strong>file a complaint &#8220;to determine the responsibility<\/strong> of those who ordered and carried out this attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_363659\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\" style=\"width: 482px;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-363659 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-scaled.jpg\" alt=\"Aleksandar Vucic Serbia\" width=\"482\" height=\"321\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-scaled.jpg 2560w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-1024x682.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-768x512.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-1536x1023.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-2048x1364.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-750x500.jpg 750w, https:\/\/www.eunews.it\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/05\/000_34TR4UC-1140x759.jpg 1140w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 482px) 100vw, 482px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-363659\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Serbian president Aleksandar Vucic (credits: Angela Weiss \/ Afp)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/bezbednost.org\/en\/a-war-against-citizens-who-authorised-the-use-of-illegal-weapon\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgrade Centre for Security Policy<\/a> research institute also &#8220;strongly condemned the illegal and inhumane use of banned weapons,&#8221; a &#8220;<strong>blatant display of force and an attempt to incite chaos, aiming to delegitimize protests and criminalize peaceful citizens.&#8221;<\/strong> BCSP analysts call to\u00a0&#8220;publicly disclose information about the weapons used, who issued the order for their deployment, and who executed it.&#8221; The Serbian president rejected the accusations and counterattacked, &#8220;They had the idea to make up a story about a sound cannon,&#8221; he\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/vucic.rs\/Vesti\/Najnovije\/a63301-Vucic-Ponosan-na-to-sto-smo-ocuvali-stabilnost-i-mir-vucic.rs.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a>\u00a0today, claiming\u00a0it was a &#8220;normal anti-drone gun.&#8221; Indeed, Vu\u010di\u0107 assured that &#8220;<strong>there is no sound cannon in the Serbian army<\/strong>.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">According to the president, this is &#8220;another evil lie&#8221; to &#8220;destroy Serbia.&#8221; Vu\u010di\u0107 warned\u00a0&#8220;A<strong>n investigation will be completed within 48 hours,<\/strong> and all those responsible for such brutal fabrications and lies will be held accountable and brought to justice.&#8221;\u00a0As the Belgrade Centre for Security Policy pointed out, <strong>in 2022, the Serbian Ministry of Interior submitted a law<\/strong>, later withdrawn following public pressure, to legalize acoustic devices as a crowd-control tool. A new draft law is currently under development, &#8220;though it remains undisclosed to the public,&#8221; the BCSP reveals.<\/p>\n<h4 id='which-side-is-the-eu-on-von-der-leyen-will-meet-with-vu\u010di\u0107'  id=\"boomdevs_2\">Which side is the EU on? Von der Leyen will meet with Vu\u010di\u0107<\/h4>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\">The hundred thousand &#8212; 300,000 for the Archive of Public Gatherings, an NGO that counts people at the protests &#8211;gathered in the area between the National Parliament and Slavija Square, led, once again, by students and farmers, who entered Belgrade driving their tractors. At Slavija Square, students said that they &#8220;<strong>will no longer allow officials of any party to organize attacks against students<\/strong>,&#8221; referring to the raids and ambushes perpetrated by militants of the ruling nationalist party. As it unfolded, the European Commissioner for Enlargement, <strong>Marta Kos<\/strong>,\u00a0thanked with<a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MartaKosEU\/status\/1901029246103060815\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a post<\/a> on X &#8220;all those who ensured the security&#8221; of the protesters and\u00a0pointed to the need for &#8220;<span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\"><strong>an agreement on the reforms necessary for Serbia<\/strong>&#8216;s path towards the European Union.&#8221; Guillaume Mercier, spokesman for the EU executive, said the European Commission &#8220;expects a prompt, transparent, and credible investigation&#8221; by Serbian authorities into the use of prohibited weapons against protesters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"margin-bottom: 0px;\"><span class=\"css-1jxf684 r-bcqeeo r-1ttztb7 r-qvutc0 r-poiln3\">So far,\u00a0<\/span>Brussels has\u00a0remained\u00a0<strong>very cautious about supporting the protests<\/strong>. Serbia is a long-time candidate country, and Vu\u010di\u0107, in power since 2012, is an interlocutor who promises stability. Isolating Belgrade would risk reorienting it toward &#8211; already latent &#8211; pro-Russian or otherwise decidedly anti-European positions. However,\u00a0the European Commission can&#8217;t stall for long, and perhaps something is moving: four months after the protests began, <strong>President Ursula von der Leyen will meet Vu\u010di\u0107 next week<\/strong>, the EU leader&#8217;s communications service\u00a0announced.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>March 15 was the new climax of four-month-long protests.
